FIGHTING FILLIES Kick Off Inaugural Season
W ith an early 49-yard touchdown run by
Holly Custis, the Fighting Fillies, Portland’s
newly formed full-contact women’s football
team, quickly established dominance over
L.A .’s Black Widows. The women in blue
and white took their fancy footwork and
dominating hitting to an astonishing win of
74-6. “Even after coaching boys and men for
25 years have I never had a team surpass the
65 point mark,” Coach Lyn Lumley mar
veled from the sidelines.
The presence of a women’s full-contact
football team in Portland is a significant one.
In their inaugural year, the Fighting Fillies’
40-strong roster marks the latest instance
o f a nationwide shift in sports and gender
equity. “Unlike roller derby, which has been
around for women [for] a while, we have not
had the opportunity to play a game typi-
at the door, with all proceeds benefiting the
Portland Women’s Crisis Line. For more
information, visit share-sn.com.... In related
events, PW C L and Portland State Univer
sity’s Women’s Resource Center will “Take
Back the N ight” on Thursday, April 29 with
a march, ride and rally to increase awareness
o f interpersonal violence. Assembling at the
South Park blocks at PSU, participants will
take two different routes—on bike and foot—
throughout the city. Entertainment begins at
6 p.m., ride and march at 7 p.m., with a sur
vivor speak-out and vigil to follow back at the
South Park blocks. The event is co-sponsored
by PSU’s Queer Resource Center, Students
for Unity, Portland Community College and
other resources. Visit wrc.pdx.edu or pwcl.
org for more information. Both the SHARE
Support Network forum and Take Back the
Night event will be ASL interpreted....
O n Thursday, May 6 at Fulton Commu
nity. Center (68 SW Miles St.), Community
Outreach o f O ur United Villages hosts the
Make a Friend of Your Neighbor Commu
nity Building Workshop.. LGBTQ_ partici
pants are invited to learn tools and strategies
for preventing conflict and building positive
relationships with neighbors and community.
The free event runs 2-3:30 p.m. Snacks will
be provided, and childcare, transportation
and interpretation is available upon request.
RSVP by May 3; call 503-546-7499 or email
cally looked at as a male sport, which is why
many o f us are drawn to play,” shared Wendi
Kali. “I am 40 years old and now can play
just like the boys do.... It feels powerful!”
Such empowerment translates to life off the
turf, regardless o f gender, sexual orientation
or physical ability. I t’s a message the team
hopes to pass on to all women, and even
their male fans. Lumley sees great devotion
in his players, and called coaching thë team
“the best decision I have ever made.”
The Fighting Fillies continue their 2010
schedule with three more home games, fac
ing off against the Utah Blitz (Apr. 24) and
Central Cal W ar Angels (May 1 and June
19). All games start at 6 p.m. at La Salle
High School in Milwaukie. For more infor
mation, check out fightingfillies.com.
