The women in blue and white took their fancy footwork and dominating hitting to an astonishing win of 74-6. “Even after coaching boys and men for 25 years have I never had a team surpass the 65 point mark,” Coach Lyn Lumley mar­ veled from the sidelines. The presence of a women’s full-contact football team in Portland is a significant one. In their inaugural year, the Fighting Fillies’ 40-strong roster marks the latest instance o f a nationwide shift in sports and gender equity. “Unlike roller derby, which has been around for women [for] a while, we have not had the opportunity to play a game typi- at the door, with all proceeds benefiting the Portland Women’s Crisis Line. In related events, PW C L and Portland State Univer­ sity’s Women’s Resource Center will “Take Back the N ight” on Thursday, April 29 with a march, ride and rally to increase awareness o f interpersonal violence. Assembling at the South Park blocks at PSU, participants will take two different routes—on bike and foot— throughout the city. Entertainment begins at 6 p.m., ride and march at 7 p.m., with a sur­ vivor speak-out and vigil to follow back at the South Park blocks.
