TRANSITIONS ♦ » SH ER YL JO Y W O O D S ID E . 1950-2009 Sheryl Joy Woodside (pictured in front), was born on January 1,1950 in Christchurch, New Zealand. She moved to Portland in 1980— the year that Mt. St. Helens blew— and chose Portland, Ore. because it reminded her o f New Zealand. I had placed an ad in the Willamette Week in late July 1989 seeking a monogamous partner who would take a greenhorn, just-out gal to be mine; a friend showed her the advertisement. Sheryl took the chance and answered the ad, and on August 4 ,1 9 8 9 1 met her in front o f the old Montgomery Wards building at Jantzen Beach. It was the beginning o f an amazing 20 years together, during which we shared the ups and downs o f a partnership that has left me with millions o f memories. Sheryl was oil to my water. We were so different. She loved gardening, any type o f sports, and traveling. She loved cats, big dogs, and was allergic to horses. She hated to cook and kung fu movies. She was painfully shy, a war- . tight-fitting glove. The older sibling to three sisters, he attended Grant High School and was well-known among the L G B T community. He worked at Darcelle’s in the kitchen for sev eral years before getting into Show Biz— Show Biz Video Arcade, that is. Working as a cashier at the video game room led to being an usher and cashier for Tom Moyer’s Luxury Theatre, where he worked at the Broadway theater, Guild, Southgate, and KOIN. Jarvis returned to the remodeled Broad way location after Regal Theaters bought the chain. He took early retirement in 2007 from the Pioneer Place theater and most recendy volunteered for the Elder Resource Alliance’s Senior Ser vices office at Friendly House in Northwest Portland. Jarvis passed away on December 23 from a massive stroke. He was 61. There will be a funeral service at 11 a.m. January 11 at First Baptist Church, 3138 N. Vancouver Avenue in Portland.
