P ortland G ay V olleyball Looks Forward to Fall Ball Tourney The Women’s Flat Track Derby Asso ciation recently announced that Portland’s own Rose City Rollers all-star team, The Wheels of Justice, has earned a spot in the 2009 W FTDA Western Regional Tourna ment. The team will compete against nine other all-star teams representing other regional roller derby leagues for a chance to advance to the Fourth Annual W FTDA National Championships, being held November 13-15 in Philadelphia, Pa. The Western Regional Tournament— which includes teams from California, Washington, Oregon, Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado, Utah, Idaho, Wyo ming, Montana and Hawaii—is set for this weekend, October 2-4, in Denver, Colo. The Wheels of Justice are seeded third in the tourney and will play the winner of the first game at 5 p.m. Friday, October 2. The team will play in at least three more games over the course of the three-day event. In other sports news, Portland Gay Volleyball is anticipating its Fall Ball tournament, set for October 10-11 at Tualatin Hills Recreation Center (15707 SW Walker Rd. in Beaverton). The two- day, indoor tournament will host over 30 teams from Vancouver, B.C., Washington, Oregon, California and Idaho. Registration is closed, but you can still show up and support your favorite team. Those who hope to participate in the 2010 North American Gay Volleyball Association Championships, hosted right here in Portland by PGV, must play in at least one NAGVA event to qualify for the nationals in May. As the campaign to recall Mayor Sam Adams enters its final days, chief peti tioner Jasun Wurster remains optimistic about hopes to collect enough signatures to put the recall on the ballot. “We are seeing a massive increase in the number of petitions getting turned in,” Wurster said via a press release dated September 28, adding, “I cannot under score how much we need each person ... to donate a few hours this week making sure that we get the signatures we need.” As of press time, over $18,000 in cash and in-kind contributions had been received. The deadline for petitions to be turned in is noon Monday, October 5. Starting with the campaign’s official launch on July 7, organizers have had 90 days to collect 32,183 signatures from registered Portland voters; the recall effort was aiming for 50,000. Wurster reported that the campaign had given out over 11,000 printed petitions and that "spot checks of the petitions performed by the campaign have a validity rate of greater than 90 percent."
