If the M AC counter looks particularly packed in early September, there’s good reason: the fabulous Darcelle XV will be presenting the title of Most Glamour ous Female Impersonator in the World to one worthy contestant at the 2009 La Femme M agnifique International com petition! The 27th annual event will be held Sunday, September 6 at the Oregon Convention Center, and will feature a performance by RuPaul's Drag Race alumna Ongina. Contestants are told that merely “passing” as women isn’t the key. Rather, glamour, stage presence, and high-drama showmanship are the judgment criteria. The pageant kicks off with an evening gown contest, followed by a freestyle round set to the themd o f “Out o f This World-A Glamourous Odyssey.” A talent competition precedes the unforgettable Showgirl finale— the glorious presenta tion o f the world’s best drag performers strutting their stuff with the Las Vegas headdress look. The competition has run into contro versy due to being closed to transwomen- contestants with breast implants, and those who have been taking hormone shots, or who have undergone what the entry guidelines cryptically term “gender altering” are barred from being crowned La Femme Magnifique. Guest performer Ongina went from being “a flamboyant little Pinoy boy” to a nationally-recognized drag icon— and Viva Glam spokesmodel for M A C cos metics— after participating in RuPaul's D rag Race. Immediately upon winning the competition, she made history by announcing her H IV status on national television. - Nick Mattos Sun., Sept. 6, doors at 5 p.m .,pageant at 6 p.m., Oregon Convention Center's Port- land Room, 777 N E M artin Luther King, Jr. Blvd., S35, wvrw.darcellexv.com.
