CAP S 23rd AIDS W alk Needs Your Support Board Certified Internal Medicine Sports Injury - HIV - HPV/STDs - Hepatitis - PSA/Prostate Cancer Dermatologic Problems - Physical Exams - General Adult Healthcare 2400 SW Vermont St, Portland 503 - 452-0915 vm em , TO » w New patients are always welcome. Cascade AIDS Project has undergone some serious changes in the past year. The nonprofit brought on a new executive direc tor in Michael Kaplan and public policy coordinator in B.J. Cavnor, moved to brand new offices on SW Fifth, added new hous ing opportunities for people with AIDS, and is strengthening efforts to engage com munities of color. Coupled with an overall expansion of the organization’s HIV test ing programs, the folks at CAP have been working hard. Now they need your help. On October 11, CAP will hold its 23rd AIDS Walk Portland, with the goal of raising $325,000 for HIV/AIDS services, education and outreach to youth and adults most at risk of contracting HIV. An esti mated 10,000 people are anticipated at Pio neer Courthouse Square to show support. Kaplan explained that last year’s walk experienced the first financial decrease in the history of the event, due to the Septem ber market crash. “Last year’s AIDS Walk actually came $50,000 under budget,” he said. “It was the first sign for us of a bad economy.” But the clouds appear to be clearing for CAP and Kaplan, as high-level sponsors have already begun signing on, including the event’s first presenting sponsor, The Standard, a Portland insurance, retirement and investments company. Sponsorship revenue has doubled from last year, and a recent sign-on from Nike is also expected to help CAP reach its financial goal. “There’s some energy built that we didn’t Have last year, and I think that’s great,” said Kaplan. AIDS Walk Portland 2009 will have two honorary co-chairs: Multnomah Board of County Commissioners Chairman Ted Wheeler and his wife, Katrina. CAP also plans to launch a challenge in the gay community to encourage Portland bars to organize the largest walking teams and raise the most money. In return, the winning bar will host the after-party event. Departure Restaurant, located on the top floor of The Nines hotel, will host the VIP breakfast on the day of the walk for those who raise $1,000 or more. “The big deal for us is, I think we bot tomed out in 2008,” said Kaplan. “It was our first year decrease, and we’re seeing a turnaround already in terms of the new high-level sponsors coming on and in terms of the energy behind it.” You can do your part by sponsoring a walker, or becoming one yourself.
