Red Dress 2009 in Review On May 2, the ninth annual Red Dress event at the new Bodyvox Dance Center kicked off with high expectations, and an equally high volume of crimson revelry. Former Red Dress Board President Reid Decker weighed in on the glamour and glitz of the bash, citing the new location as a key factor in its success. “This was our first time in Northwest Portland,” said Decker. “The Bodyvox space was incredible for our event. The logistics and layout of the party, in my opinion, were the best to date.” The gala took in $30,000, to be split between Esthers Pantry, Outside In and Senior Housing and Retirement Enterprises (SHARE). While certainly a hefty philan thropic sum, Decker noted that a down econ omy and a failed alcohol sponsorship from Absolut contributed to slightly less than Red Dress raised last year. Still, the organization sold 1,667 tickets, and with 335 complimen tary passes distributed to the necessary media outlets, sponsors and volunteers, attendance ballooned to a sold-out total of 2,002. Past Red Dress soirees have boasted lofty celebrity guest lists (Chelsea Clinton in 2008), with a focus on excessive fashion fun and, perhaps above all, a charitable eye for Red Dress PDX. The organization supports gay youth and helps friends, neighbors and family members living with HIWAIDS and other serious diseases. This year’s party featured stellar perfor mances from Storm and the Balls, VJ Dan- tronix, DJ Harmonix and Tahoe Jackson, among others, along with the presence of celeb-attendee Martha Davis, from iconic ‘80s band The Motels. The highlight of the event, said Decker, was a scholarship created in the name of recently departed friend and board member Russ Joyce. Now, almost 40 years after the incident, the Q_ Center is hosting a forum for eight esteemed members of the gay community to share stories of how this struggle helped change their lives. In this installment of the Our Stories series, Out for Good: 40 Years After Stonewall commences with a night of living history and reconnection. The event takes place at the Q_ Center’s new location (4115 N.
