Forget about anti-gay evangelical mega church pastor Rick Warren. For a moment, anyway. Why? Because eight Portland- area lesbian musicians are heading to Washington, D.C., as guests of honor for the presidential inaugural parade Jan. 20, to play as members of a super-size national gay and lesbian band. The band’s appear ance in the parade marks the first time in history’ that an openly queer organization will officially march in a presidential inau gural parade. Teresa Nowicki, a41-year- old Rose City Gay Freedom Band trom bone player heading to D.C. for the gig, says she’s thrilled at the chance to be part of such an historic moment, and doesn’t think Warren’s presence on the inaugura tion podium should overshadow rhe band’s place of honor. “We can’t get all pissy just because somebody we don’t agree with is included in the events,” she said via phone. VT* Off to City Hall The New Gay Activism Is Dead...Maybe MARTY DAVIS Portland Mercury news editor Amy Ruiz will continue skulking down the aisles of City Hall in Barberama owner Brian Fuqua thinks his new salon- plus-coffee-shop combo will attract queer consumers, even in a recession. STUNNING CONDO IN HOLLYWOOD Less than six weeks after rocking Portland with one of the city’s largest gay rights rallies in recent memory, it sounds like Stumptown’s resurgent grassroots gay activist movement is, well, kind of dead. Or at least on vacation for a while. Lindsey Asher, the activist who organized a series of Portland events in November and December as part of the national “Join the Impact” movement, says she’s stepping away from planning any big events in conjunction with the national group until at least the spring. The reason? Asher’s co organizer, Debra Porta, has separated herself from the organization, and Asher says she’d like to pull back and focus more on larger- picture activism. So instead of rallying the PDX forces Jan. 10 for a planned national protest of the Defense of Marriage Act, Asher instead is facilitating a workshop that day at Q Center, “teaching people how to talk about marriage equality,” she says. The workshop, which starts at 11 a.m., is free.
