Elder Resource Al- liance scre"ens The Artist Illuminates the Past For her latest show, Driven to Ex, cremes, Portland arti t Serena Barton casts into history to pull to the center marginalized poets Veronica Franco, a Renaissance poet/courtesan, and Juana Ines de la Cruz, a 17th century Mexican poet/nun. Barton uses color as well as text from the women themselves to ere, ate a rich approach that illuminates them more fully. "I am fascinated with layers of iden, tity and personality and with the stories of these women who lived long ago and dealt with many of the same issues we do today," says Barton. "They were driven to pursue lives at the margins of their societ, ies i~ order to have the means and leisure to write a educate themselves. Both were committed to the eq and both wrote sophisticated, evocative poetry that r mitment." The work for the show is varied, including oil ai ings, encaustic collages, mixed,media collages, tered books. For Barton, exposing the caffolding helps make a connection to the viewer. Ritz, a classic comedy starring Rita Moreno in her Tony-winning role as a club singer at the New York Baths, at Friendly House. Light refreshments served.
