NIGHTLIFE NIGHTLIFE NIGHTLIFE NIGHTLIFE NIGHTLIFE NIGHTLIFE Upstairs, by the way, is the sprawling first floor of Karl Wilgus’Casey’s complex. The addition of bar-stomping strippers (if your cocktail tastes like cock, don’t act surprised) and a postage-stamp stage drag show added to the circuslike atmo sphere. The only question 1 have is this: What doesn’t go on at this bar? Back at the Pleasure Boys scene downstairs, my friend and 1 took a seat to watch silent Blond ie music videos on a small screen and kicked back vodka-sodas ($6 a pop). As another old-school poppy dance tune hit the speakers, a group of girls rushed in to bump uglies with their ambiguously gay guy dates. That’s when 1 “got it”: Pleasure Boys might not be everyone’s scene, but it’s a crazy big-top event in a tiny space that is the very contemporary definition of queer. —Stephen Marc Beaudoin This is not your daddy’s Eagle. Skinny jeans, graphic T’s and Debbie Harry on the screen. Punk dudes and horn-rimmed hip ster girls in equal supply. And not a sling-riding bottom boy in sight. If you’re looking for a hardcore leather scene more typically in line with the “Eagle” brand, you better come back another night, because the new Pleasure Boys party—the first Saturday of each month—is all about danceable beats, egalitarian crowds and pure pop pleasure. “We’re trying to in tegrate a different crowd, as opposed to the typical Eagle crowd,” says Danny Bidwell, who more usu ally goes by the moniker DJ DannyDamage. He calls the manic scene he’s creating “more edgy” and “all over the spectrum as far as music goes.” “Schizophrenic” is how a friend of mine de scribed the whole scene on a recent visit, and he’s not far off. While early 20s Portland Mercury reader types freak-danced to Nirvana and Rihanna remixes—courtesy of no less than The Gossip’s Nathan Howdeshell, aka DJ Nightschool, a guest spinner for the night—a stream of disoriented daddy bears sauntered in, poked around (the new Eagle leather shop is closed on Pleasure Boys nights, dang) and wan DJ Danny Damage hopes to draw a different crowd to the Eagle for his monthly party.
