A Cliffhanger of a Dance Forming and maintaining a dance company i no small feat. For every artistic decision to be made, there are everal le glamorous but equally im, portant tasks that need doing: raising money, finding rehearsal space, recruit, ing board members, arranging ticket sales for performances and much more. Jason Ohlberg, a choreographer based in Seattle, has been there and done that. About 10 years ago, he finished danc, ing with the re, nowned company Hubbard Street Dance Chicago and then founded his own mall dance troupe, called Same Planet Differ~nt World Dance The, atre. Ohlberg remembers how much effort it takes to direct a dance company. "Run, ning a nonprofit is a hard thing to do, especially if your love is making dance, because there's a lot involved ... that has nothing to do with the artistic proce ," he ays. So Ohlberg knows what he' talking about when he say he is incredibly im, pressed with Bouand DanceCompany, which Portland dancer, teacher and choreographer Alexandrous Ballard tarted here in 2005. Ohlberg recently traveled to Port, land to work with Bouand in prepara, tion for the company' performances this month; hi dance "Precipice" is on the program. "Precipice" i franti, cally paced, athletic and demanding for the dancer to perform, but Ohl, berg says the Bouand dancer "bit into the challenge." "Alex has~me great dancers with a lot of varied kill ," say Ohlberg. Ohlberg has enjoyed hi dance, related vi its to Portland from Seattle, which he picked as hi home five years ago when it became time "to move mewhere where I wanted to live, rather than to live for work." (Seattle The Blow performs with Point Juncture, WA at Eugene's WOW Hall. (8:30 pm. 291 W Eighth Ave. $12 at the door, $10 in advance from TicketWeb.) - is also where Ohlberg met his first nondancer part, ner, John.) "It's interesting to see how different cities' com, panies look.; they have a different DanceCom, pany, for instance, is aiming for a European flavor. Ac, cording to its Web site, part ci the company's mission is "producing and presenting works choreographed by young artists from the European Union and beyond." In keeping with that goal, the June program in, eludes a new work from Bouand Dance Deanna Company's June Carter, an program includes gay award, win, choreographer Jason Ohlberg's ·Precipice." ning cho, reographer who ha made dances for a number of European companies.
