Host and producer Julie Sabatier and guests explore gender in terms of biology, sexuality and identity. Guests are Diane Anderson-Minshall, executive editor of Curve magazine, who discusses her partner’s transition from female to male, as well as her own “femme” gender identity; Cody Bambino, who identifies as “genderqueer” and will discuss life outside the gender binary; Jamila Kisses, who was bom a straight male and began cross-dressing later in life; and Ace Furnish, who began his transition from female to male at age 15. The show is undergoing a transition of its own. With this episode, the 2-year-old show willchange its name to Destination DIY from DIY, Portland. Destination DIY, which is syndicated on KBOO-FM at 10 a.m. every third Thursday of the month, reaches thousands of listeners online. “Some of the people that listen identify as gen derqueer, but the vast majority are going to get a little education,” said Sabatier. Sabatier, a former Just Out staff writer, said she conceptualized the story through conversations with friends and associates from the gender-vari ant community. Although the stories presented were deep ly personal and serious, the show was light ened up by a discussion on how fashion plays a role in gender expression. “Fashion can make gender variance fun but not frivolous,” said Sabatier. A new issue of the accompanying zine Destina tion DIY, funded by a grant from the Regional Arts and Culture Council, will be available at Reading Frenzy and Powell’s Books. A listening party for “DIY Gender Expression” starts 7 p.m. June 19 at Waypost Coffeeshop, 3120 N. Williams Ave. The queer documentary Paris Is Burning will be screened afterward. Curve Sits Out of Portland Pride Repeal Watch: Concerned Oregonians Admits Defeat on Repeal Initiatives And just like that—it’s over. For now. In a stunning turn of events, David Crowe’s Concerned Oregonians group has admitted defeat and abandoned its efforts in collecting signatures for three initiative petitions designed to repeal Oregon’s two landmark civil rights laws from 2007, the Oregon Family Fairness Act and the Or egon Equality Act, according to e-mail communications from Crowe and his supporters. In a June 10 directivè to his followers, Crowe writes, “Too little time remains to collect the required signatures,” adding that the sole remaining hope for placing a repeal vote for the Oregon Family Fairness Act, the state’s same-sex domestic partnerships law, on the November ballot is not with their initiatives, hut in the resurrected Lemons v. Bradbury “case of the dis enfranchised voters,” which is scheduled for a July 8 hearing in Portland. Concerned Oregonians’ failure to even reach the petition signature col- lection phase of their anti-equality campaign is due to several factors: sloppy ballot initiative authorship by the chief petitioners, an underpowered and underfunded organization, and the efforts of Basic Rights Oregon and the American Civil Liberties Union in commenting on and appealing each ini tiative at every step of its development along the state’s initiative process. “It is not surprising that these anti-equality groups have again failed to meet even the minimum requirements for public support for their efforts,” said BRO’s Jeana Frazzini in a written statement, adding that the “news comes just in time for Portland’s Pride Weekend—and we all deserve a cel ebration!” Although Crowe and his coterie of anti-equality supporters have failed to send their initiatives to the ballot, he pledged to continue his fight with another petition initiative in 2010. —Stephen Marc Beaudoin Curve magazine, the world’s largest lesbian publication, will have no presence at Portland Pride, despite years of sponsorship. Its sponsorship offer was rejected unanimously by the Pride Northwest board April 15 after what Pride Northwest vice president Hank Renfrow called a “cost benefit analysis.” “Curve is awesome. It was nothing personal,” said Renfrow. “It just wasn’t worth what we were getting in return.” According to Curve associate publisher Sara Jane Keskula, the magazine offered $7,500 in print and Web advertising, in addition to edito rial coverage.
