Richard Curtis, R-La Center, resigned Oct. 31 after garnering national attention from a gay sex scandal. News broke Oct. 29 that he was the victim of extortion. Police documents show that Curtis, 48, had sex Oct. 26 with Cody Castagna, 26, at Spokane’s Davenport Tower hotel after meeting him at the Hollywood Erotic Boutique earlier that morning. “I am not gay,” Curtis, who is married, told the editor of the Clark County Columbian. According to Spokane TV station KXLY4, a Hollywood Erotic Boutique employee called Curtis “the cross-dresser." The station reported he was seen receiving oral sex from an unidentified man in one of the store’s movie viewing booths while wearing women’s lingerie. Curtis told a Spokane detective that he gave Castagna $ 100 for “gas money" and that Castagna stole his wallet and demanded $1,000, threatening to out Curtis if he did not pay. Castagna says that Curtis agreed to pay him $1,000 in exchange for sex and that Curtis gave him his wallet as “collateral” when he did not have the cash on hand. According to The Columbian, Castagna has faced multiple charges in juvenile court in Spokane and King County involving assault, theft, burglary and malicious mischief and in 2001 pled guilty to forgery and was sentenced to two months in jail followed by a year in community custody. Curtis voted against the final passage of Washing ton’s domestic partnership law earlier this year. Silverado Reveals When but Not Where As real estate continues to shift on the Stark Street strip, Silverado is keeping mum about where its new location will be when it moves from the Continental Building at 1217 S.W. Stark St. The former home of Club Portland (as well as Silverado), the Continental Building was sold to Gerding Edlen Development earlier this year. Silverado co-owner Donald Sexton says the bar will officially close its doors by the end of December. He says he, patrons and staff will walk “en masse” to the new location, which will open the first week of 2008. What we know is it’s within walking distance of Stark Street. “I like all the rumors that are going around. 1 really enjoy it,” said Sexton. “That’s why 1 haven’t told anyone where it’s going to be." Sexton previously told Just Out that the busi ness closed on the purchase of a new space for the 25-year-old gay bar Aug. 1, despite the fact that no public records indicate Sexton, partner Thomas Breazeale or any of their LLCs bought any commer cial property this year. Ken Palke of the Oregon Liquor Control Commission says Sexton and Breazeale have yet to put in a request for a transfer of their liquor license to the mysterious new locale. The homeless youth agency, which benefited from the 2004 premiere of queer Portland director Gus Van Sant’s Elephant, announced last month that it will be presenting an advance screening of I’m Not There. The highly anticipated film dramatizes the life and music of Bob Dylan as a series of shifting person ae, each performed by a different actor: Marcus Carl Franklin, Cate Blanchett, Ben Hinshaw, Christian Bale, Heath Ledger and Richard Gere. The invite-only fund-raiser will be hosted Nov. 4 by queer Portland filmmaker Todd Haynes, who wrote and directed I’m Not There. “Outside In understands and addresses the needs of homeless youth with a comprehensiveness and sensitivity unlike any organization I’ve ever known,” he said in a statement. Since 1968, Outside In has provided compre hensive services to 600 home less youth a year, many of whom are queer. The agency builds on their strengths and builds the confidence that is required to be able to accom plish their goals. Outside In moves youth out of street life and into self- sufficiency by giving them access to meals, skilled coun selors, medical and mental health services, a nationally recognized job training pro gram and drug and alcohol treatment groups. An on-site transitional housing program delivers some of the most suc cessful outcomes in the nation.
