Sure, it’s the only gay bar in Southwest Washington, but it’s also a hot spot for karaoke, cabaret and a trans-friendly pumpkin contest 6 p.m. Oct. 27. Billed under the name “Jackie O’Lantern,” the event is sponsored by the Northwest Gender Alliance as a benefit for Esther’s Pantry, Martha’s Pantry and Q Center, (firing your precarved pump kin, no larger than 10 pounds. No sharp objects allowed.) Gender bending Halloween cabaret will follow the 7 p.m. pumpkin judging and pumpkin auction. Northbank boasts a diverse crowd of mixed genders. “1 used to have a girls night and I used to have a boys night and I don’t any more. Every night caters to everybody,” says Brent Bartling, who bought the bar five years ago with his partner in life and work, Darrell Spoon. Although “girls night” and “boys night” are out, the bar does have a number of themed nights including “Licious Karaoke” on Wednesdays and Fridays as well as “Buck Off Mondays," when the price of any item over $2 drops by a dollar. On Sundays, it’s happy hour all day long and pool is free. Five dollar pasta dinners (spaghet ti or fettucine alfredo) are served with $2 well drinks from 5 to 9 p.m. Tuesdays. Northbank also offers “Lipz Cabaret” on the second and fourth Saturday of each month. The Portland Area Business Alliance, a sexual minority business networking organization, will show Northbank some love with an “After Hours” event at the Vancouver bar from 6 to 9 p.m. Oct. 28. Although Northbank is an anomaly in the area, Bartling says it fits in just fine. It has the feel of a neighborhixx! bar, and he sees far fewer clashes between rhe straight and gay communities than he did 11 years ago when he started bartending there. “I think that people are becoming more open-minded and accepting,” he says, “and because people, aren’t as closeted anymore, everyone knows or is related to somebody who’s gay.” —Julie Sabatier 1125 SW Stark St. • 503-227-5887 Scandals is one of the city's oldest gay men's bars and has been con tinually providing a comfortable setting, great cocktails and a "more than friendly" bar staff to men from Portland and from out of town for 30 years.
