OCTOBER 19. 2007 just, out Thanksgiving Day Weekend Nov. 23-25 Hip Chicks do Wine and King’s Raven Winery have paired up for this weekend’s wine tasting extravaganza. There will be live mu^ic each day! World Cup Fan Fest. Fortunately, Phillips has found a job that allows him to work between gigs as a representative for Dragonfly Imports, selling its hxly jewelry products to stores and pierc ing parlors while on tour. When he’s not traveling with the band, he works odd jobs as a serv er at Crush and a licensed massage therapist at Studio X Fitness. Although many in the hand might call themselves “queer,” Katie Colgan is the only other March Fourth member who identifies as gay. The 22-year-old plays one of four trombones in the band’s 12-piece brass section. “I’m one of the youngest and least experienced players, so I have to work maybe three times as hard to learn a song, but at the same time it really pushes me," she says, “and the music is some of the best music you could wish to hear or even play.” Colgan says being gay is a “nonissue" when it comes to March Fourth. “We joke about it, but everyone’s a little gay in this band. I’m just farther along and more out than most people." For the past three years, Colgan has managed to balance playing in March Fourth with her school work at Portland State University. She was not able to travel to Germany for the World Cup gig, but she graduated with a bachelor’s degree in community development in time for the fall tour, which brought the band to 26 different cities to play venues like the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., and the Knitting Factory in New York. “It [was] a great graduation gift to just he with March Fourth and travel the nation,” she says, noting that the band stayed with her family when it stopped in Colorado. “My fam ily loved having them, and they loved being there.” When the band returns from its whirl wind tour of the United States, Colgan will get back to her nonmusical passion: building green roofs. Sometimes called “living roofs" or “vegetated roofs,” these environmentally sound constructions use the roof surface as a place to grow plants, which reduces storm water runoff and leads to more effective heating and cooling. Phillips and Colgan are just two examples of the wide range of band members March Fourth attracts. “We have some people who are lawyers, some are sculptors and body workers. I've developed some great friend ships with people,” says Colgan. “It’s always a relief to be with the band.” © M arch F ourth M arching B and Admission is $15 and includes wine tasting of 18-22 wines, free logo glass, live music and appetizers.
