Blues on Tuesdays. Live DJs on Friday and Saturday. Rude Awakening Portland’s alternative dance scene is getting a lesson in manners—or, rather, lack thereof. How Rude and How Rude Pants Off Dance Off are the newest queer- themed dance parties to hit the Rose City. According to founders and main DJs Blake “Bdrmeyes” Cedric, Alex “Olek” Frum, Danny "Damage” Bidwell and Wesley "III Camino” Camino, the nights are an attempt to Bring together a diverse crowd of peo ple through dirty, dance-happy music. “How Rude is different because we all play different styles of music,” Bidwell says. “It’s nice to have some thing new coming up with Booty and How Rude DJs III Camino (left) and other dance nights ending.” Frum adds, "There’s something good at the Eagle every Saturday night, but we want to make it a more diverse crowd, more dykey.” Cedric agrees, saying the point of How Rude was to offer “something for everyone. It’s not so much the music all going together as it is just playing good songs.” Casey’s bartender Eddie Pineda “had a lot to do” with getting How Rude off the ground, Frum says. “He’s (been) a good friend of us all for many years.” Putting the two events together has been no easy feat, but word-of-mouth publicity has helped the nights start off with a bang. “The turnout was shocking,” Cedric says of How Rude’s trial run. “There was actually a dance floor full of people.” The fact that it is a free event also helps draw in the crowds, Frum says. “Maybe in the future it might cost a few dollars for fliers, but we had to make it free in the beginning.” Cedric adds, “We’re not doing it for money, we’re doing it for fun.” to SHANGHAI STEAKERY 16 NW Broadway • 503-228-9325 A locally owned gay bar known for good music, great drinks, the best prices in town and tottery. SOUTHSIDE SPEAKEASY Frum says they’d eventually like to turn the night into a more experimen tal, performance-based event. “We want to include visual and performance artists, comedic performances, something like How Rude Presents or the How Rude Showcase.” Until that happens, though, the boys say the fast music and hot attendees are enough reason to come. “Cheap booze and heavy, cool dance music,” Cedric says. “Plus, it’s a gixxi- looking crowd.” The How Rude events alternate between two venues. How Rude troubles prudes every first Thursday at Casey’s Underground, 610 N.W. Couch St., and How Rude Pants Off Dance Off ruffles feathers every third Saturday at the Eagle PDX, 1300 W.
