Showing up to work is not exactly like pulling teeth for the underground rock-pop hand. With its upcoming label debut, A Night at the Ritz, it’ll be punching the clock in Portland to kick off an 18-date tour with Earlimart—and the group might just put in some overtime. “I feel like this is the start to something bigger," says band frontman Scott Masson. “I’ve been doing music since 1 was 7, and this time feels like the ultimate test.” Slaves to the grind since 2004, Office is a catchy blend of mainstream commuter pop with the lo-fi sounds of basement rock bands borne of water-cooler schemes. Band members Masson, Jessica Gonyea, Office frontman Scott Masson (second from left) hopes to draw Alissa Noonan, Erica Comiel and Tom Smith have queer fans to the band's Portland gig. quickly built a musical resume from their hometown of Chicago that makes them eligible for radio play and tour dates throughout the country. “We’re pretty proud of [the band], but there’s still an element of fear. Music is so much about the promotion these days and not really about the art,” says Masson. “We feel like we’re doing a great job writing good music for what is kind of a competitive sport.” The new album is a self-proclaimed compilation of the band’s “greatest hits that nobody’s ever heard," spanning the past few years’ worth of songs to create a solid, catchy record. “I don’t think there is only one defining sound on the album, but it’s still unified. We really wanted this album to be the best introduction to a bigger audience,” says Masson. As if these guys haven’t already qualified for Employee of the Year, they are also unabashedly for, and by, the queers. Masson, an openly bisexual man, admits that their queer following isn’t exactly the size of a corporate mailing list, but it’s certainly growing. “We’ve never been exclusive with the queer scene, but we are definitely open to more!” Loosen up your ties and take a coffee break with Office on Sept. 27 at Doug Fir Lourfge.
