They are insistent that the new hahy not change their lives and so have continued with an active social life, which is great. (As you must know, a lot of lesbian moms disappear altogether when they hatch a baby.) The problem is that Beth breast-feeds in public without any care about who is around or where we are. We think it’s inappropriate and want to tell her that we are fine with her breast-feeding at our home or in discreet settings but not in the mall, in a restaurant or at my father’s 70th birthday party, for instance. I’m not rhe only one in our group of friends who BY MERYL COHN thinks so, hut I'm being pressured into being rhe one to ask Beth to keep the boobs in the bra. Jill came hack from the dinner saying there was “chemistry” and “hope for a long-term relationship." However, Stephanie came back singing a different tune about <xld behavior, inappropriate innuendo and general creepiness. Stephanie said she’d never go out with Jill again. Luckily, Stephanie has a good sense of humor and the bad date didn’t sour her toward Andrea at work. We do know that Jill sometimes overstates her opinions and has inappro priate boundaries and a nerdy sense of humor, especially when drinking. Should we tell her about Stephanie’s assessment of the evening? We think it might bring her back into the realm of reality. We also think it could help her act a little more normally on future dates. Breast-feeding is how all mammalian mothers sustain their babies; it’s not a dirty, shameful act that nursing mothers should hide at home or in a dark stairwell. If all women felt free to whip out their h<x>ters at Starbucks and the bank, you would cease to feel fear and discomfort at the sight of a mother feeding her young. Perhaps you are unconsciously aroused by breast-feeding. Don’t be ashamed; you were raised in a society that has eroticized breasts to the point where they seem separate from their nonsexual function. Maybe your own mother pulled her nipple away from your hungry mouth too SLXin. But please don’t take it out on Beth and Beth’s baby. Instead of trying to embarrass Beth out of feeding her child, work on becoming more comfortable so that you can tolerate it. Desensitization might he the best way: Start by Googling “breast-feeding photos.” In the beginning, you might only endure 30 seconds of kx>king at photographs of infants sucking on engorged breasts. You’ll soon work your way up to longer viewings until you ultimately are no longer disturbed by the pictures. By then you’ll be ready to tolerate live feedings: Ask one Beth to hold you while the other one clamps the baby to her lxx)b. Once you’re healed of your problem, Ms. Behavior hopes you will scxjthe others who are similarly frightened and train them to embrace a woman’s right to feed her baby any where and everywhere. If Jill knew how to behave “normally,” she probably would have done so. Unless you’re in the mixxl to humiliate her, there’s no point in mentioning the failed fix-up. Telling her how dates perceive her will only make her feel self-conscious. It never helps to say, “You’re a freak,” because the freak, by definition, can’t see herself clearly. (If she could, she wouldn’t be so freakish.) It might be useful, however, to specify very concretely which of her behaviors were off- putting—e.g., “Jill, normal physical boundaries with a new acquaintance allow for at least two feet in every direction, so please keep your hands in your pxKket and your tongue irt your mouth unless you’re invited closer.” Keep in mind that you might completely avoid the problem of feeling responsible for Jill if you refrain from being her matchmaker, mommy and coach. © M f .RYL C ohn is the author of I\> What I Say: Ms. Behavior’s Guide to Gay and Lesbian Etiquette.
