With a Little Help from His Friends Leiv Fagereng’s Golden States show at Froelick Gallery will he the established artist’s first solo show in Portland. “I’m 42 and I’m feeling nostalgic for the ’70s and in the paintings there’s not a lot of technol ogy,” Fagereng says of his oil-on-canvas works. “It’s about people in their skin, playing guitar,' singing to the wind. It’s really lo-fi as far as our modern world today.” Inspired by Frida Khalo and Italian Baroque painter Caravaggio, Fagereng’s colorful paintings are a mixture of the real and the surreal. Nude male and female figures, birds and wildlife all seem to play across the canvases. “Sunny Bunneson” depicts a nude woman with green'hair playing guitar on the beach, sur rounded by birds, a dog and empty Boddington’s beer cans. Upon further examination, she appears to have four hands. Fagereng says many of the pieces in Golden States were inspired by his friends. The figure in “Sunny Bunneson” is loose ly based on his friend Paula, a burlesque dancer who lives in Seattle. eatingiout eating|out “She tells it like it is,” he says. “I appreciate those friends. They keep my knife blade sharp. I never get dull with them around.” Fagereng moved to Portland from the coast in the early 1980s. He took a job at Jamison Thomas Gallery when he was 19, working closely with William Jamison and Brad Rogers, both of whom he cites as mentors. “William was the kind of guy who encouraged me to go to Europe for eight weeks and gave me my job back when I came back,” he says. Fagereng has been heavily influenced by Gustav Klimt and says he hopes to paint his own version of Klimt’s “The Kiss” with two male figures, as he begins to explore his own sexuality more overtly in his artwork. “If this work that I’ve done for this show is about the golden states of me and my posse, my people, 1 think the next work is going to be a little more gutsy, a little more polit ical and little more homoerotic,” he explains. Golden States is on display through Sept. 26 at 714 N.W.
