Leadership Camp Has Local Support
More than 40 student leaders from colleges and universities across
the United States attended the first-ever camp for queer college
students last month.
The five-day leadership camp from July 24 to 29 was affectionate
ly referred to as “Gay Camp,” hosted by the Queer Student Union on
the campus of Towson University in Towson, Md. Longtime gay rights
activist Terry Bean of Portland helped sponsor the event, and
Corvallis resident CM Hall was on the faculty.
Keynote highlights included Neil G. Giuliano, executive director of
the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation; Sabrina Sojourner,
the first out lesbian elected to Congress; Kevin Naff, editor of The
Washington Blade; Andria Ruben McCool, adviser to Google; and
activist and author Vernon Wall.

Shane Windmeyer, executive director of Campus Pride and author
of The Advocate's College Guide for LGBT Students, said: “The camp
attendance more than exceeded our expectations for the first year. We
are absolutely thrilled with the diversity and quality of student lead
ers coming to camp. These leaders are our future and will play a key
role in advancing the movement for LGBT rights.”

Faith Community Supports Repeal
The Unitarian Universalist Association of Congregations
concluded its annual General Assembly in Portland with passage of
a statement June 24 calling for repeal of the U.S. military’s “don’t ask,
don’t tell” ban on gay, lesbian and bisexual servicemembers. The
Action of Immediate Witness, which calls for passage of the Military
Readiness Enhancement Act, House Resolution 1246, a congression
al bill to repeal the law, was overwhelmingly supported by the 6,000
attendees at the conference.

“People of compassionate faith understand the importance of ending
discrimination in our armed forces,” said Capt. Joan Darrah, a member
of Servicemembers Legal Defense Network’s advisory board, who was
instrumental in the resolution’s passage.
The Unitarian Universalist Association consists of more than
1,010 congregations in the United States, with more than 220,000
members, and is served by more than 1,100 ministers.
The statement by the general assembly calls upon its individual mem
bers to pledge themselves to work for repeal of “don’t ask, don’t tell.”

Merkley Challenges Smith
After weeks of speculation, Oregon House Speaker Jeff Merkley,
D-Portland, announced Aug. 1 that he would take on U.S. Sen.
Gordon Smith, R-Ore.
Merkley, a native of southern Oregon, paired Smith with President
Bush on policies, including the war with Iraq.
“We must restore sanity to America’s foreign policy and regain the
respect our nation has lost because of the tragic mistakes George Bush
and Gordon Smith have made in Iraq. It's time to bring our military
men and women home to their families,” he said.
Merkley also promised to lead a federal switch to renewable ener
gy and said Congress should pass a commonsense plan to ensure that
all receive quality health care. The lawmaker said he will travel
around the state to officially announce his candidacy during the next
few weeks.
His only declared opponent, political operative Steve Novick, had
this to say about Merkley’s announcement: “Oregon voters deserve
better than Gordon Smith. Over the next 10 months, 1 plan to travel
the state—listening to voters’ concerns and sharing my vision. It would
be my great pleasure to have Jeff join me in that journey.” ©
