Merkley Challenges Smith After weeks of speculation, Oregon House Speaker Jeff Merkley, D-Portland, announced Aug. 1 that he would take on U.S. Sen. Gordon Smith, R-Ore. Merkley, a native of southern Oregon, paired Smith with President Bush on policies, including the war with Iraq. “We must restore sanity to America’s foreign policy and regain the respect our nation has lost because of the tragic mistakes George Bush and Gordon Smith have made in Iraq. It's time to bring our military men and women home to their families,” he said. Merkley also promised to lead a federal switch to renewable ener gy and said Congress should pass a commonsense plan to ensure that all receive quality health care. The lawmaker said he will travel around the state to officially announce his candidacy during the next few weeks. His only declared opponent, political operative Steve Novick, had this to say about Merkley’s announcement: “Oregon voters deserve better than Gordon Smith. Over the next 10 months, 1 plan to travel the state—listening to voters’ concerns and sharing my vision. It would be my great pleasure to have Jeff join me in that journey.” © By J ulius C alasicas , J aymee R.
