Here are this year’s selections: • Westworld (July 26): A futuristic amusement park becomes a deathtrap when the androids begin to run amok. This 1973 camp classic features a stoic performance by Yul Brynner as the whacked-out android sheriff. Musical guest: Charlie Girl & the Big Package. • The Killing (Aug. 2): After spending five years in Alcatraz, Johnny Clay decides that if he’s going to commit crimes, the risk had better be worth the punishment, so he masterminds a brilliant scheme to steal $2 million from a racetrack. This 1956 classic heist film was directed by a young Stanley Kubrick, who will be the subject of a Northwest Film Center retrospective through August. Musical guest: Bright Red Paper. • Heroic Trio (Aug. 9): Hong Kong’s hottest action heroines—Anitia Mui, Michelle Yeoh and Maggie Cheung—star as the ass-kicking Tung (Wonder Woman), Chat (Thief Catcher) and Ching (Invisible Woman), who team up to defeat an ancient monster that is stealing children of royal blood in an attempt to find a new Chinese emperor in this 1993 film. Musical guest: Dirty Mittens. • Sullivan’s Travels (Aug. 16): In 1941 the king of screwball comedy, Preston Sturges, spun the yam of John Sullivan, a fellow film director of highly successful and frivolous fare who experiences a sudden pang of social consciousness. What the world needs, he surmises, is a serious epic examining the grim state of the extra-cinematic world: O Brother, Where Art Thou! will be his masterpiece. Musical guest: Hurah Hurah. • Kansas City Bomber (Aug. 23): Roughhousing roller derby diva K.C. Carr—“the hottest thing on wheels”—is reluctantly traded by her Kansas City team to slam for the “Portland Loggers.” This 1972 action film features old glimpses of the Rose City and the seedy world of a once-hot but dying sport. Bomber boasts a standout performance from Raquel Welch (who did her own skating, and even broke her wrist!) and an early glimpse of a 9-year-old Jodie Foster as her daughter. The Rose City Rollers will be in attendance! Musical guest: Sexton Blake. • Beach Party (Aug. 30): Surfing teens Frankie and Dee Dee (Frankie Avalon and Annette Funicello) sing, battle bikers and dance the summer away in this 1963 family film featuring cheese and beefcake in equal measure, with quick cameos from Vincent Price and Beach Boy Brian Wilson. Musical guest: Blue Skies for Black Hearts. —Jim Radosta Splendora and the Gender Fluids join forces with Felina's Arrow on July 27 at Someday Lounge.
