SCANDALS 1125 SW Stark St. • 503-227-5887 a FOX Ir HOUNDS W 217 NW Second Ave. • 503-243-5530 Miss Gay Oregon to Be Crowned Fez Ballroom is hosting the Miss Gay Oregon America 2008 Pageant, a preliminary to the 2008 Miss Gay America Pageant, which will he held this October in Memphis, Tenn. The Miss Gay Oregon America Pageant is an aspect of the Imperial Sovereign Rose Court, the nonprofit organization that makes possible various social and charity events for the gay community statewide throughout the year. Miss Gay Oregon America is a for- profit organization that was acquired last year by Cory L. Murphy, owner and chief executive of MediaPointe Productions. He says his intention in purchasing the pageant was to bring a raised level of competition to female impersonation in Oregon. “Portland in particular has one of the highest concentrations of female impersonators, and transgendered people in general, in the United States,” Murphy explains. “But prior to this time, if you were a performer, there wasn’t an avenue here, specific to Oregon, for you to really reach the top of your craft.” He stresses that, under his auspices, the Miss Gay Oregon America Pageant will seek the best of the best, seasoned performers and professionals. “What we’re looking for is the next Katie Harman of the world of female impersonation,” Murphy says, referring to the Gresham native who was crowned Miss America 2002. For the July 15 pageant, six contestants are scheduled to compete. “You normally have three to five contestants in a first-year pageant, so we’re doing quite well,” Murphy says. The pageant will bring a wealth of talent to the city and should be attended by a number of luminaries, notably Miss Gay America 2007, Luscious, who will be on hand to crown the pageant winner as part of her ongoing duties as the national pageant’s reigning queen. Known away from the gossamer spotlight as Ron Gates, a 29-year-old native to the Carolinas (he’s called both Columbia and Charlotte home), Miss Luscious set a goal to win the Miss Gay America Pageant quite a while ago. “It took me four years to do it,” she says. First she was crowned Miss Gay North Carolina and Miss Gay Kansas Regional in 2005, then Miss Gay Western States in 2006, and finally the crowning achievement last fall. “I have no idea what I’m going to perform yet when I come to Portland," Luscious admits, explaining that she bases her set on the vibe of the crowd. “I don’t want to go to a hip-hop club and perform punk rock, you know? I can usually tell by the end of my first number what kind of crowd it is." The Miss Gay Oregon America 2008 Pageant will take place 7 p.m. July 15 at 318 S.W. 11th Ave. Tickets are $15- $30 from www.missgayoregon.com. —Tony Le Tigre According to BarFly, this "cheery, kicked-back pub draws a convivial, mostly mature crowd to its somewhat countrified environs."
