Margo Tufo has worked her way into what is usually a male-dominated career, where butch dykes are truly a minority. Tufo couldn’t be more ecstatic to be part of the line of great musicians who hail Portland as one of the top cities for blues music in the country. Featured in the Waterfront Blues Festival, Tufo is also taking on the challenge of working her way into what is usually a male-dominated career, where butch dykes are truly a minority. “I’ve called myself a man without a country, because this [blues music] was a man’s world. There weren’t that many places to play, except for Portland,” says Tufo. Tm such a fan of women in music, and the blues is always so cross-generational, too. I love this series because so many of the artists who come through are my friends." With the Candlelight being a friendly place for all, Tufo and her ladies of blues descend upon the smoky bar with only one goal: to keep the blues alive for all in Portland. Tufo performs with Sonny Hess July 10, Rae Gordon July 17, Lady Kat July 24 and Carlee Smith July 31. The music runs from 9:30 p.m. to 1:30 a.m. at 2032 S.W. Fifth Ave. —West Duncan “I told Gwenn I didn’t really think that I had changed that much, except for maybe my hair was grayer. She said she could see changes."
