B ehavior : My dear friend Bj is a social climber. Lately, he is involved with a group of wealthy lesbians and barely has time for me. At the hub of his new circle are a couple, Doris and Cynthia. The problem started when Dinis and Cynthia reserved a table for 10 at a gay and lesbian charity event. BJ invited me to buy two tickets at the glamour table for $100 each. 1 soon realized 1 couldn’t go, so I returned the tickets to BJ so they could be resold. Now BJ says that Doris forgot to give the money back to him, but he doesn’t want to embarrass her by mentioning it. BJ refuses to pay me back unless Doris reimburses him. This sucks because it proves that BJ values his new rich friends more than me (and we’ve been friends for 10 years). Two hundred dollars is a lot for me. I’ve thought about e-mailing Doris directly, but 1 don’t want to annoy BJ. How can I make BJ see that he’s wrong? —James Whether you're a running novice or a seasoned marathoner, Portland season games are played throughout the summer at Gordon Faber Recreational Complex in Hillsboro. All levels of experience are welcome Night in Black Leather and The Leather Duck Club are the first and third Friday of each month at Gail’s Dirty Ouck Tavern (9 pm-midmght 439 NW Some people get into relationships and then find they can’t go very deep, either because of their history (bad mommy) or circumstance (ugly recent breakup). Mo probably meant it when she said she loved you, but then couldn’t really dive in, because she wasn’t done with her ex. So, if Mo couldn’t work it out with you, why is she dating someone new? Because it’s easy. Some people can do the “getting to know you” phase of dating but can’t move beyond that—to the murky, exciting place you go when you’re intimate with someone. (This is where they reveal their creepy little needs and sore spots and you love them anyway.) Sure, you could harden your heart and protect yourself with cynicism. You could decide never to believe anyone who claims to be devoted to you. But do you really want to do that? Sadly, you can’t fully protect yourself from getting hurt but still leave yourself open to love (You Tender Little Sparrow, You). Here’s a quiz that might help you to discern whether to trust the person you’re dating: 1. When does she tell you that she loves you? a. When she’s looking into your eyes b. After she’s thrown your grandmother’s china against the wall in anger c. While she’s going down on you d. When her ex-lover is within earshot 2. What does she do when you reunite after a weekend apart? a. Grunt b. Complain about how long you’ve been gone c. Greet you, sodomize you, and fall asleep holding you d. Confess that she had phone sex with her ex After writing the above two questions, Ms. Behavior decided that no others were necessary. You probably don’t even need an answer key. Good luck. Sucking up to the rich is just as shallow as the teenage behavior of worship ping the hip or beautiful. It’s clear that BJ is trying to feel better about himself. Still, it’s distressing to learn your friend is more superficial than you suspected. You can’t “make” BJ see your point of view. Further discussion is likely to flop right now. You’re already agitated and insecure, and BJ is sipping Doris’ K<x)l-Aid and therefore unable to assess the situation fairly. If Doris never remembers to return the money, you could write a friendly note, offering best wishes for the event and sending regrets that you can’t be there. You could mention that you haven’t gotten your refund hut that you expect to receive it after the party is over. Who cares if BJ gets annoyed? He’s pretty annoying himself. if nothing pans out and you never see your $200, at least you’ll have donated it to a gay and lesbian charity (and not, for example, the National Rifle Association). • MERYL C ohn is the author of Do What I Say: Ms. Behavior’s Guide to Gay and Lesbian Etiquette.
