(11 pm.) TUE • JUNE 26 Q Center hosts Gender Queery for people whose genders toe the line, sit somewhere in between, vacillate, fluctuate or otherwise. (7-9 pm. 69 SE Taylor St.) For almost three years, a man named Art came to see Mike Jones, an escort, at least once a month. With time, the relationship deepened, including sexual experimenta tion as well as sincere conversation. One day, Jones recognized Art preaching hate on a religious cable channel. He soon discovered that Art was actually the Rev. Ted Haggard, who, as president of the National Association of Evangelicals, influenced the daily lives of 30 million followers, advocating virulently against gay rights and same-sex unions, with direct access to White House policymakers. Jones reads at Powell's Books from I Had to Say Something: The Art of Ted Haggard's Fall, the disarming story of how a sexual relationship became a lightning rod that completely changed two men's lives as well as, possibly, the history of American governance. Men throughout Portland are picking out their outfits, borrowing makeup and researching hair removal techniques in preparation for a Sexual Minority Youth Resource Center benefit July 22 in Pioneer Courthouse Square. The event is designed with a dual purpose in mind: to raise money for SMYRC and to shatter the Guinness World Record for most drag queens in a chorus line. According to Mark Middleton, an adult volunteer at SMYRC, the record stands at 58 drag queens in a chorus line. “Our goal is 100, and in order to be one of the participants in and receive a certificate as a Guinness World Record holder, you have an entrance donation of $100, and 100 percent of that goes to SMYRC,” explained Middleton, who came up with the idea of the record-breaking fund-raiser, although Jonathan Weedman he says youth will be involved at every level of planning and execution. According to Guinness standards, a drag queen is a male in womens attire with full face makeup and a wig. In order to qualify as a chorus line, the queens will need to do a synchronized dance to a song that is at least five minutes in length. The event will have to be monitored and certified by several people who will sign notarized statements saying that they witnessed the chorus line and that the drag queens danced for the entire five-minute period. Portland’s own Darcelle will be presiding over the event, and although only men can participate in the chorus line, women and girls are encouraged to dress up as drag king cheerleaders. “I think it’s just a great*way for people to not only have fun and do something historical and have a blast,” said SMYRC program manager Jonathan Weedman, “but it’s also an opportunity to really give to queer youth in Portland and support queer youth in Portland.” —Julie Sabatier THU • JUNE 28 The Adventure Group takes an easy bike ride to the Last Thursday gallery walk on Northeast Alberta Street. The story is told using colorful scenes from 1970s erotic life and can did interviews with the gay New Yorkers who lived it.
