The Greater Portland Intercollegiate Queer Society hosts College Night 10:30 pm Fridays featuring different music every week, $3 off the cover with student identification and speed friend-making (like speed dating!) for the first hour. Shanghai Surprise Shanghai Steakery, located in Chinatown at 16 N.W. Broadway, has undergone a renaissance of sorts during the past year or two. General manager Jay Mitchell, who t<x)k over at the beginning of 2007, is candid about the club’s formerly unsavory reputation. “In the past it’s been seen as a place where a lot of drug dealing went on," he says. Mitchell, who describes him self as “not exactly a newcomer to the gay bar scene in Portland,” has worked for C.C Slaughters and Embers in the past, as well as a brief previous stint as manager of the Steakery from 1999 to 2000. Already in his half-year of management, the Steakery has seen new drinks, new staff and drastic improve ments in decor. “We have neon lights and mirrors new where there used to be blank walls,” says Mitchell, aka Jay Della Rosa. “Our owner, Timmy Pso, is Chinese, so we’ve Jay Mitchell has refreshed Shanghai Steakery's drinks, staff and given the upper deck a Chinese decor since January. flavor to suit his culture.” During the day, the Steakery maintains the ambiance of a family-style gay bar and restaurant, while the wilder things come out to play at night. The first Friday of every month is Club LT., a free dance and costume party with a variable theme. The Steakery also hosts four or five charity parties throughout the year, such as the Miss Shanghai Pageant, which just t<x>k place in April. Next up June 2 is “Anchors Away," a raffle and party to benefit Camp Starlight and Blackout Leather Productions, coinciding with the Rose Festival Starlight Parade and the hallowed tradition of Fleet Week. A couple of weeks after that, of course, will be Pride. “We’re one of only two gay bars that’s directly on the route of the Pride parade, since it was moved off Stark Street,” says Mitchell. (The other is Embers.) The Steakery plans to celebrate Pride Weekend with a bingo party Friday, a show Saturday and al 1 -day food and drink specials Sunday.
