Nearly 60,000 indie fans descended upon Indio, Calif., for the eighth Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival, a heavenly lineup of perform ers in a hellacious location. More than 100 acts took over five stages for three days of eardrum-splitting, sunbum-inducing fun in the sun. It’s something akin to the ultimate mix tape come to life. This year’s fashion statement was white: over sized white-framed sunglasses, white leather belts, white kids dancing to hip-hop. Lots of white. Frontman Shaun Ryder—his brain fried from all those years with the “24 Hour Party People”—had to read his own lyrics from monitors. It was like watching bad karaoke. The Essential Rufus • “April Fools”: Openly gay from the beginning of his career, Wainwright made an unmistakable splash with this Beatles-esque debut single from his 1998 self-titled disc. • “Cigarettes and Chocolate Milk”: A poppy song from 200l’s Poses with a dark undertone: “Everything it seems 1 like’s a little bit stronger, a little bit thicker, a little bit harmful for me.” He would eventually confess that the song was recorded while hooked on crystal meth. • “Rebel Prince”: This track about a guy “breaking everything trying to get away from me in this two- bit hotel” was inspired by a spat Wainwright witnessed right here in Portland. • “Grey Gardens”: A somber rumination on the 1975 cult documentary about Jackie Kennedy’s wacky aunt and first cousin. Wasn t in Portland and 1 wasn’t in heaven. Could have been either by the way 1 was feeling.” • “Gay Messiah”: From 2OO4’s Want Two, an instant queer classic for these blasphemous lyrics: “No it will not be me. Rufus the baptist 1 be. No 1 won’t be the one baptized in cum.” • “Going to a Town”: The Canadian crooner bravely tackles touchy topics on the first single from Release the Stars: “I’ve got a life to lead, America. Tell me, do you really think you go to hell for having loved." • “Between My Legs”: Filled with introspective lyrics (“I’m afraid of one thing: Will I walk away from love knowing nothing, wearing my heart between my legsT), this standout from Release the Stars comes to a rousing climax with a spoken-word passage by 73-year-old veteran stage actress Sian Phillips.
