Sometimes a Hangover Is Worth It C.C. Slaughters has gone through a lot of changes since it was first opened on Southwest Stark Street in 1981 hy flamboyant Fish Grotto bartender John Adams (who also opened the Eagle PDX two years lat- er). In those days, it had an aquarium, a small dance floor and a gallery featuring works by local gay artists. These days, relocated to Old Town under different ownership, the dance floor is much larger, while the aquarium has given way to hardcore gay pom and the gallery to high-tech lights and lasers. Name the occa sion—New Year’s Eve, Mardi Gras, Cinco de Mayo—and it’s a safe bet Slaughters will be hosting a party for it. On a typical week the club, which seems to operate as a sort of sexuality vortex in which straight and gay co C.C. Slaughters celebrates its 26th birthday May 19. exist in drunken harmony, showcases a diverse range of musical styles ranging from country-western to hip-hop to Top 40 mash-ups, plus a monthly bear night. It’s going to be an especially big party May 19, with its 26th annual birthday bash. From 9 p.m. to last call, the queen-sized, mirror-walled dance floor will be jumping with a celebration hosted by local drag icon Bolivia Carmichaels, high-heeled hostess of the “Superstar Divas” variety show every Sunday, as well as of last month’s Red Dress Party. House DJ Alex Hollywood, who got his start at now-defunct Portland clubs like Panorama and The City, will be responsible for igniting the dance floor and keeping it in flames throughout the night. Providing additional social lubrication will be go-go boy dancers, Slaughters’ hunky and testosterone- drenched staff, and the usual cheap, stiff drinks and XXX-rated pom (just in case you had any doubt what’s on the agenda after bar close). And you’ll have a good soundtrack for your after-hours fireworks, since free limited-edition club CDs will be given away during the party. All this for no cover charge, unless you count a hangover and perhaps some pangs of morning-after shame. —Tony LeTigre ¿ft FOX b HOUNDS w 217 NW Second Ave. • 503-243-5530 According to Barfly, this "cheery, kicked-back pub draws a convivial, mostly mature crowd to its somewhat countrified environs."
