If someone says, “I’m bad with money" or “When I get drunk I wear my panties on my head and pick fights" or “After six months of dating, I usually need to fuck someone new,” it’s not a good idea to think, “The power of my love will help her to rise above that itty bitty issue." It’s better to ask yourself, “Could I live with this problem, or will it make me lie on the fkxsr in a snotty puddle and cry?” Not wanting to have children with you isn’t a personal problem like the others, but it’s a clear indication that Sheila doesn’t think that you and she are suitable life partners. Perhaps she doesn’t feel chemistry or can’t imagine waking up together 50,000 days in a row. But be honest with yourself: Is there anything concrete and specific about you that makes you a bad parenting prospect? For example, if you refuse to get a job or wear a seat belt or if you’re a crack whore, it’s easy to see why Sheila doesn’t regard you as a good co-parent. But if you’re a fully functioning adult and a loving partner but just not right for Sheila, you need to find a way to accept that fact. (News flash: A success ful relationship requires that both members believe the relationship can work and that both are willing and able to nurture it.) If Sheila isn’t in love with you, it doesn’t mean that you’re not lovable or that you wouldn’t make a gixxl mother. But it does mean that your relationship has an expira tion date and that you should probably move along rather than wait for it to sour. D ear M s . B ehavior : Jack, my hoyfriend of the past six years, has had problems with drinking and drugs. I’ve sent him to rehab twice, and he was actually sober for two years. He started drinking again a few weeks ago. I’m filled with dread because I’ve already cleaned up more than my share of vomit and have hailed him out of jail a couple of times. Jack confessed that he also went out on a crystal meth binge last month and slept with a hustler while I was out of town. Now he promises he’s cleaning up again. My friends think 1 should dump him, but! still love him. Should I stick around or bail out? —Gerry www. glsenoregon org) meeting people and doing activities other than bar hopping. (kyleinportland@yahoo. com) enng for gay and bi men who are interested in a healthy I moved in with my partner, Sheila, a few months ago. I’m 35 and Sheila is 38; we both want children. The problem is that Sheila told me early on that she loves me but doesn’t see me as someone she’d want to have kids with. I thought Sheila would change her mind, but so far she hasn’t. This puts me in a strange position, because when I’m really honest with myself, it seems that maybe the relationship has no future. On the other hand, I keep hoping for a happy ending, which depends on Sheila changing her mind. What do you think I should do? —Scaredy Cat sequent times are $7. Please join us! D ear G erry : First, it’s time to drag your own sorry butt to Al-Anon. Meetings are geared toward supporting the loved ones of alcoholics and addicts. Second, think about your relationship five years from now: What if each time you think things are going well, it unfurls into a similarly horrible mess, where you can’t count on anything hut the chaos? There’s nothing wrong with wishing or hoping for your boyfriend to change—and mayhe, with the support of Al-Anon, you’ll learn ways that you can support Jack without enabling him—but you also need to recognize the possibility that he might bounce from one crisis to the next, perhaps with periods of sobriety in between. That kind of relationship actually works for some people. Mayhe Jack needs to feel like a screw-up and you need to clean the rugs a lot to feel useful. Can you live with that? If you can, fine; perhaps you have a strong constitution. Perhaps you don’t mind wiping up vomit or getting to know the cops at the local slammer. If you truly feel that you have the patience and endurance to manage repeat ed crises as they arise, then feel free to ignore your friends’ advice. But if your ability to tolerate the relationship now is based on the expectation that Jack will change, or if you secretly believe your life is meant to be glamorous, you might end up feeling resentful, disappointed and tired after a while. It won’t be pretty. © M f .RYL C ohn is the author of Do What 1 Say: Ms. Behavior’s Guide to Gay and Lesbian Etiquette. Signed copies are available directly from the author.
