Claims to be Portland's only gay-owned and -operated gay night Although there’s plenty to he said for $1 shots of apple pucker and ubiquitous porn, sometimes you need a change of pace. When that mood comes upon you, Hobo’s is where you want to go. This appealing little oasis at 120 N.W. Third Ave. has been around long enough (more than 25 years) to perfect an ambiance of equal parts class and comfort. From the street it looks like a hole in the wall, but inside opens into a seductive lounge of soft lighting, debonair dining, smooth cocktails and well-spaced tables in which you don’t have to shout to make conversation. Uniquely, it offers live piano music on a nightly basis. “I’ve been playing piano at Hobo’s for 18 years,” says resident ivory-tickler Jim Blackburn. “Longer than the current owners have been here.” In that time, he’s seen the place go through some changes. “It’s a much younger crowd now on the weekends,” he observes. “Although,” he adds with a laugh, “I used to be much younger, so maybe the crowd appeared older to me then.” Blackbum moonlights as a piano player but spends days as a teacher, giving piano lessons both privately at his home and for Multnomah Arts Center. He started playing while still in high school at age 16 and in the ensuing decades has amassed a repertoire of more than 500 songs "that I can pull out of a hat,” in his own words. He entertains four nights a week at Hobo’s and is one-half of the professional piano-and-bass duo Blackbum and Duthie, which has performed continually in Portland since 1984. With perhaps a twinge of frustration, Blackbum acknowledges that his playing often fades into the background at Hobo’s rather than assuming center stage. “I’ve spent time in other cities where live music isn’t treated with as much indifference as it seems to be here," he says. “It doesn’t have the same clout as it used to, and that’s especially true of piano music.” Background or not, though, Blackburn’s fluid, improvisational piano stylings are a key ingredient in the suavely sophisticated atmosphere of one of Portland’s classiest gay establishments. —Tony LeTigre club, Portland's favorite gay bar and Portland's "original" premier gay nightclub.
