Power of the Purse Portland celebrities and community leaders are teaming up with local designers to create beautiful, one-of-a-kind handbags that will be auctioned off April 5 to benefit Girls Inc. of Northwest Oregon, a nonprofit that works to inspire girls to be strong, smart and bold. The second annual Power of the Purse event raises money to develop and launch Girls Inc.’s Economic Literacy Program, which will teach girls to make sound economic decisions. “The Power of the Purse event celebrates the value of economic independence in the lives of girls and young women,” says Annette Klinefelter, Girls Inc. executive director. “By giv ing Oregon girls the skills to build and use the power of their purse, we’ll prepare them to save money, avoid out-of-control credit card debt, make smart spending choices and lay the groundwork for a stable future. Community members can foster the next generation of girls by using the power of their own purse to support the program.” Local celebrities, or “purse-onalities,” developing creative concepts for each handbag include film director Gus Van Sant; entertainer Kevin Cook, aka Poison Waters; philanthro pist Arlene Schnitzer; Mint restaurant owner Lucy Brennan; state Sen. Avel Gordly, I-Portland; and US Bank president Malia Wasson. Designers working directly with these celebrities in the construction of their handbags include Candice Nicole, Denise Kortes, Eta Borsetta and Minou-Minou. All the bags dif fer in shape, size and construction—from leather shoulder bags to elegant evening bags. The purses will be auctioned off during a fashion show featuring girls who participate in Girls Inc. programs. The event will be hosted by KINK-FM radio host Rebecca Webb and sixth-grader Sydney Greenslate, who stole the show last year by declaring, “Invest in me because 1 can change the world!” Vicky Trabosh, a designer who participated last year, formed a bond with Greenslate and is now her mentor. Klinefelter says this kind of connection between successful women and Girls Inc. girls is an added benefit of the event. Power of the Purse will be held from 5:30 to 9 p.m. at Portland Art Museum’s Grand Ballroom, 1219 S.W. Park Ave. The dinner will he catered by Salvador Molly’s.
