Brother to Brother Holds First Fund-Raiser Thorpe Lands New Post Portland’s progressive reputation sometimes gets in the way of the work Brother to Brother does, in terms of identifying and breaking down barriers faced by sexual minorities and people of color. Members of the organization want to convey the message that its work is still relevant as it holds its first fund-raiser, Keeping My People. The event’s theme draws connections between the gay and the civil rights movements. “As liberal as Portland projects itself to being, racism is overwhelming here," said Darryl! Mtx:h, executive director of Brother to Brother. “We are still dealing with basic civil rights here. We, as an African-American GLBT community, need to make the connection between civil rights and gay rights so the black community will begin to see it and not become victims of an extremely conserva tive viewpoint.” Keeping My People will honor seven people and the Multnomah County Health Department Care Services team, which has contributed significantly to the African American and gay and lesbian rights movements. Keynote speakers are Marcus Mundy, president of the Urban League of Portlander Roey Thorpe, former executive director of Basic Rights Oregon, has accepted a post at Equality Federation, a national network of state-based sexual minority advocacy organizations. She will begin March 5. Thorpe still intends to live in Portland as she works as the group’s .first director of advocacy services. She recently resigned from the national Freedom to Marry organization. “There are talented and dedicated leaders across this country who have been the backHbne of our movement for many years,” said Thorpe. “My job will be to make sure that they have the strategic tools and resources they need to continue to move this coun try, city by city, state by state, toward full equality.” Thorpe will develop and implement a pilot project for supporting state-based efforts to accom plish key policy goals, such as local and state non discrimination laws or family recognition policies.
