Club I.T., a free monthly hipster-goth night hosted in the lowbrow Shanghai Steakery, is vulgar, grimy and not to be missed! Going to Club I.T. feels like a perverted time trip into the early days of the New York club kid scene, back when not much was happening hut everyone was really excited about it. Everyone I met the night 1 popped in seemed to be a character of extreme desperation with the sole purpose of partying like the apocalypse was upon them. Club I.T.’s clientele is the most excessive hodgepodge of freaky characters I’ve ever seen at a queer night in Portland—and baby, I’ve seen them all! This gorgeous mixture of lost alcoholics, troubled tweakers and hipster twinks all stems from location location location. Right off West Burnside Street at 16 N.W. Broadway, the Shanghai has become a notori ous watering hole for Portland’s queer down-and-out. Once renowned for thrifty (yet scrumptious) cuisine, Shanghai has now become the hub of liver disease and the 12-count Saint Caedmon (left, with DJ Jimmie Jamma) created Club I.T. pour! I am no stranger to drinking, but one vodka-cranberry and I was out of commission as a trashy alternative to trendy bars. for the rest of the weekend—but, boy, did 1 have a good time...I think? Club I.T. is successful because it doesn’t try to scare away the regulars or put on any false veneer. Instead, everyone parties together with a totally inclusive goal of getting really smashed and having a great time. Saint Caedmon, co-creator and frontman for I.T., couldn’t be more proud. “Club I.T. is about debauchery. It’s about trash. It’s about being trash and getting trashed and kxiking fabulous while you do it.” I find this attitude in young gay culture refreshing. With the gay scene flocking to trendy bars like Crush and Holocene with their muddled cocktails and clever DJs, it is nice to find a place where the last thing on people’s minds is being elite. When I asked Saint Caedmon about the space, he agreed: “Some people are genuinely afraid of the venue; there’s something in that, though. There’s an ele ment of danger. That, mixed with the strength of the drinks, lays out an environment in which anything can happen. And we hope it does!” It seems to me he and resident DJ Jimmie Jamma might be creating a monster, but until someone loses an eye, I’ll be there on the first Friday of every month! —Mark “Zebra" Thomas I r.
