B ehavior : My partner, George, and I own a two-family house and rent the first floor to a middle-aged male couple. Our tenants are antique-collecting hears who pay their rent on time and greet us cordially. But recently we noticed that they have sectioned off part of our basement for their own use, and put a lock on the d<x>r to the area they created. We can look through the slats in the makeshift wall, and are horrified by what we see. They have hung hooks from the ceiling with a leather sling, and have added shelves of tools that look like torture devices. There’s also a huge plastic basin, which my boyfriend thinks is intended for golden showers! First of all, the basement is clearly off-limits to tenants. Second, we have no idea who they plan to put in the sling, or where these people will come from. George and 1 are arguing about how to handle it. George is going apeshit, because he fears that our tenants will soon turn our basement into a public place for fisting. He wants to call the police and throw our tenants (.Hit. 1 think he’s overreacting. We need the extra income we get from our tenants, and it’s hard to find new renters to take over a lease in the winter. I prefer to avoid conflict anyway, and these guys now seem a little scary to me. So, I would rather live and let live, despite feeling repulsed. What do you think we should do? —Mr. Peaceful D ear M r . P eaceful : Don’t be intimidated by bears. Beneath their hairy exterior (and, in this case, the pro clivity for hanging each other from hooks on the ceiling), they are often as sweet as Gentle Ben. And if these particular bears turn out to be grizzlies, you can always set them free. Your response to the situation is too avoidant and George’s is too aggressive, but somewhere in the middle is a solution that is just right. You’ll need to have a frank con versation with the hairy mammals. Tell them they can do whatever they’d like in their own first-floor space, with people they know, but the basement is yours; the house can’t be used as a rest stop, and the dungeon has to go. Be firm, and it’s likely that they will move their sling without much argument. On the other hand, you might have a money-making opportunity on your property: If you’re willing to put video cameras in your basement, you can record their nocturnal activity and sell the clips to the Nature Channel. D ear M s . B ehavior : My girlfriend, Suzanne, insists on a monthly dinner with her childhood boyfriend, a straight guy named Bany. Barry is nice, but I have started making excuses to be somewhere else. He smells moldy to me. Suzanne says I’m imagining that it’s as bad as it is. She says it’s his car that’s the problem and that the smell attaches itself to his clothes. 1 don’t care what’s causing it, but 1 can’t be around him. He smells terrible, and the odor gives me a headache. I say she should tell him. She says she can’t risk offending him. She’s mad that b won’t go out with them for dinner anymore. She says I’m jealous of their friendship. I swear I’m not. I want to tell him. She says I shouldn't. What do you think? —Barry Is Moldy D ear B arry I s M oldy : No one wants to tell a friend that his breath is deadly or that his toupee looks like nothing found in nature or that he smells like mold. But sometimes you just have to suck it up and say it and hope for the best. It would be better if Suzanne tells Barry that he smells like he’s rotting from the inside (Hit. She’s closer to him, and it will seem gen- * tier if she is the one to break the moldy news to him. But if she won’t do it, you might have to. Be kind and emphasize that you are concerned about his health. Mold can be harmful, particularly if it’s inhaled on a regular basis, including on Barry’s rides to work, his spins through rhe Dunkin Donuts drive-thru and his road trips to straight bars and Atlantic City. It can cause allergies, asthma and immune problems. Even if Barry is totally clueless and can no longer smell a thing (probably a side effect of mold damage), he might still be suffering the consequence of a soggy ride. Perhaps you can feel heartened by the fact that Barry’s problem is external and eas ily fixed. For instance, you and Suzanne could always buy him a new car. Or he could have his car carpets and upholstery tom out. It’s much better than having a humiliat ing odor problem that’s both hard to fix and hard to bring to his attention—like, for instance, if he smelled like ass. © 5 justout com Subir" sexual minorities community All listings are subject to edit tion at least a month prior to the expiration date Complete over the phone Please type your announce'1 -. mg, and inclusion is subject to space limitations, relevance listings are available online at www justout.com information MERYL C ohn is the author of Do What I Say: Ms. Behavior’s Guide to Gay and Lesbian Etiquette.
