w letters Blood Is on Your Hands To the E ditor : We are offended and disgusted by Just Out’s choice to sell advertising space for such a blatantly cruelty-based business, none other than Schumacher Furs [Jan. 5 and 19], We feel we would be insulting your intelligence to describe the horri ble way these animals live and die to become Schumacher’s product. Is there a shortage of smug-faced owning-class queers looking for a place to advertise their wares in this paper? While the mentioned owning-class queer folks represent but a tiny portion of our community, ultimately they are just that: of our community. Schumacher Furs is not. More often than not, the contributions written for this paper encourage compassion and education. We are sad to see that your advertising does not reflect this. Shame on you for accepting bloody money! We hope it was worth it. H1V/A1DS who might not have had any gifts at all. You artd 1 have known each other for many, many years, and it was a pleasure to see you so excited and enthusiastic about helping our kids. I would like to extend our most sincere thanks to you, your incredible staff and all of your communi ty partners and donors. I want to thank you so very much for organizing the first-ever Just Out Toy Drive. Your donation of thousands of dollars worth of toys made it possible for us to provide gift bags to 150 kids affected by Robert Russell Fleming died in his sleep Jan. 15. He was 31. Known as Robbie, Fleming was born Jan. 9, 1976. He led a quiet life in Lebanon during the fights against Measure 9 in 1992 and 2000 and moved to other cities in the Willamette Valley. He had a deep commitment to his faith. Fleming is survived by his parents, Anna and Robert; his sisters, Sherry and Christine; and their children. He will be missed by his best friend, Diane Rivera, and his many friends around the state. IT’S THE GAY AGENDA A memorial service was held Jan. 20 at St. Aidan’s Episcopal Church in Portland. Cecily M. Bartlett, 1934-2006 Artist and scholar Cecily M. Bartlett died of cancer Dec. 28, 2006. She was 72. Bartlett was bom June 29, 1934, in Arlington, Mass., and grew up in Wetlsley, Mass. She was the daughter of British immigrant parents John S. and Joyce I. (Dunkley) Bartlett. She was preceded tn death by her parents and by her brother, Robert S. She is survived by her sister-in-law, Augusta of Marlboro, Vt., and by two nieces, three nephews and their children. She is also survived by longtime friends Donna Dunaif, Smokey Satterlee, Katie Maynard, Sharon Gaglia and Rosi Goldsmith, who assisted her during her last year of life. Bartlett, who was known as “CB,” majored in German and graduated with a bachelor’s degree from Boston University in 1960. She attended a major Midwestern university in the 1960s with the intent of earning a doctoral degree and beginning an aca demic career, but, according to her friends, her goal fell victim to institutional homophobia when she was denied teaching credentials by those in power. She then moved to New York City and worked for the city's welfare bureau and later attended New York City Community College and became a med ical technician. Bartlett moved to Portland in 1976 from Brooklyn with pal and sidekick Dunaif. She held many jobs while she lived in Portland including phle botomist and bookseller. She also was known for pet sitting and house sitting senices. Bartlett was a tal ented artist and captured many of her experiences through cartoons. She drew a series ‘of cartoons chronicling her knee-replacement surgery in the 1990s. These were not published, but her friends and associ ates enjoyed them. She also taught herself to do beadwork and created many beautiful pieces. She was a member and treasurer of the Rose City Gay Freedom Band and played clarinet and flute.
