Jones and Thomas Tucker, who were recently killed in Iraq. For the group’s leader, the Rev. Fred Phelps, and the members of Westboro Baptist Church, who comprise the majority of its membership, the sexual orientation of these servicemen was not at issue. The threats are part of an ongoing and nationwide campaign by this small group to publicize and draw support for its view that the ongoing cost in lives and funds of the U.S. conflict in Iraq is the result of the vengeance of God, angered by anti-discrimination policies extended to sexual minorities.
