(11 am- 2 am. 219 NW Davis St.) Lights go out and glow sticks come on when Portland's newest bathhouse, Steam, presents Pride 2006 BlackOut featuring a midnight show by porn star Tag Adams. (10 pm. 2885 NE Sandy Blvd.) Pride Northwest celebrates the diversity and strength of the sexual minorities community dur ing the Portland Pride Parade. This year's theme is "Get Your Pride On!" (11:15 am. www.pridenw.org.) Acme presents a special Saturday-night edition of Wild Card, Portland's craziest monthly variety show hosted Boxxes presents Be Free, a Stark Street Pride block party featuring special guest Ultra Nate, Anthony Antoine and DJs Keoki, Dougalicious, Dawn Leonetti, Tronic and Seth Hutton. Proceeds benefit the Red Dress Party and Q Center. (11:30 am-9 pm. 1025 SW Stark St.) The Theory of Queertivity “We have no attitude—just a whole lotta sass!” explains Mark Weintz, drummer and newest addition to the hot queer quartet 3asic. Led by sexy gender-bending frontman Kelly Moe, 3asic (pronounced “Basic”) is musical synergy mixing sultry live beats with provocative lyrics and impressive layered arrangements. After countless spins of the band’s self-released album, Queertivity, the best way to describe its sound is Madonna making out with Beyonce Knowles while Zero 7 plays in the background. “We have an R & B feel with sexy vocals and an indie pop twist,” describes Moe. “My music is a raw . personal expression of how 1 feel.” You can really hear that in 3asic’s music, which is often raunchy and intimate with a slightly political skew. Moe’s unabashedly arousing vocals transcend you to a dimen sion of sexy cyberqueers inhabit ing a world invisible to most straights. That is not to say only queers would dig these guyS. Bassist Maile Thiesen says, “We are about being talented musi cians who happen to all be queer." Adds nymphy guitarist and back up vocalist Karu Wojiaszek, “I think 3asic is marketable to a Frontman "Flava” Kelly Moe recruited, from left, Maile Thiesen, mainstream audience; I could see Mark Weintz and Karu Wojiaszek to join his new band, 3asic. us on MTV." When I ask Moe about his explicit queer-centric lyrics, like in the song “Cold Mama" (“straight boy, why are you hung so low?”—a clever double-entendre about a depressed boy who is well-endowed), he explains: “Queer issues should be in people’s faces.... We don’t have a gay agenda, but I sing about what 1 know." Moe has been composing music since he was 18 on a cheap mike and a Casio. The release of his solo album as Flava Kelly last year is still my favorite CD to do dishes to. All the songs on Queertivity are created by Moe, but more collaboration with the band is planned for the future. This will be an exciting progression to watch, as each member comes from such diverse backgrounds musically. Wojiaszek made a name for himself in the acoustic folk scene of Anchorage, Alaska. Thiesen, who was actually in a band with Moe in high school called Sticky Open Lips, learned to pfay in jazz band, and Weintz is coming out with a rap album later this year. You can catch 3asic during the Total Drag competition 9 p.m. June 16 at Wonder Ballroom, 128 N.E. Russell St. Cover is $10. The band also will open for Sissyboy 10:30 p.m. June 30 at Holocene, 1001 S.E. Sundance Channel premieres The Lady in Question Is Charles Busch, a loving look at the award-winning author and playwright. (9 pm.) Logo premieres U.S. of Ant, a weekly series that follows the irreverent writer/comedian as he journeys across the United States seeking the pulse of queer culture, from rock climbing in Montana to tracking a fugitive looter with an armed lesbian bounty hunter in Mississippi to playing rugby with a predominantly gay team in Texas.
