In our June 2 issue, we previewed Pride Northwest events, and in this issue we showcase the winners of the 2006 Just Out Amateur Photo Contest. Our July 7 issue will feature pages and pages of images from all the festivities, so kxrk for your self and your friends. Don't forget to take your own camera with you as you’re out and about. Start now on compiling’your prize-winning photos for next year’s contest. For 2007, we’re going to he more creative with our category titles. Our old standbys of pets, people and nature are no longer sufficiently challenging to your vast talents and abilities. For next year we might go with categories such as: • Things I Wish I Hadn’t Seen at Pride • Elected Officials Behaving Badly (perhaps a field trip to the Multnomah County Building?) • Creative Interpretations of Lungs Damaged by Secondhand Smoke (Photoshop skills required) • Special Black and White Category (as so many seem unable to see in shades of in-between) As indicated, with this issue we are proud to share with you the winners of this year’s Amateur Photo Contest. We’ve picked the best of the best. And in featuring our staff picks, we provide some insight into the minds of the Just Out staff. Lest you be one who thinks Just Out is all-Marty all-the-time, I’d like to point out that my original caption on the photo I selected was vetoed by a cer tain news writer. What I had thought to say was, “I chose this photo because all my life I’ve been looking for a woman who will sit, fetch and roll over.” But no, they made me be bland and nice instead. could he march with BRO? Westlund’s staff says he’ll be around Saturday to do handshakes and smiles. The wannabe candidate did attend Southern Oregon Pride activities. I don’t think the governor did. Back to Kulongoski: It really bugs me that he only shows up on election years. 1 know that previous governors haven’t attended under any circum stances and that we re supposed to be honored that he attends. But yet 1 don’t feel honored. I feel pandered to. If you’re with us, be with us all the time, not just when you need our votes. And in 2006, this governor is going to need our votes. Especially if Westlund does make the ballot. ith the annuaPretum of Pride comes the usual mutterings and grumblings about anticipated boorish behavior on the part of celebrants. Mind you, now, not all of this grumbling is from me. I made my position clear years ago when 1 encouraged participants to “keep your pants on, grandma is watching.” Years later now, I feel much the same. I still fail to see the correlation between Pride and nudity/inappropriate sexual behavior. What has changed, however, is the fact that I’m now far less inclined to empower the folks who engage in this type of behavior to be reflective of the rest of us, to be reflective of the com munity that I know us to be. The Memorial Room will house a permanent display of "life journals" representing Oregonians who have died from AIDS; the Archives Room will house gay and lesbian theater memorabilia. • Lon Mabon, chairman of the Oregon Citizens Alliance, seems to sense that his professional future is on the line. "On July 5, we will ascertain the health of our organization.
