His troubles began in March when he was suspended from school after showing Brokeback High, a film he made for a class project with a same-sex snuggle scene. Flyte has now hired an attorney and wants the West Linn/Wilsonville School district to pay $ 150,000 because officials said he could not attend his prom. The school is threatening Flyte with expulsion, according to his attorney. While school officials say he was barred from the prom for poor attendance, Flyte refutes that claim on his blog, BrandonFlyte.com, and says he’s being hassled because of the queer-themed film. watch Rock Camp Sued DOMESTIC PARTNERSHIP AGREEMENTS ADOPTIONS • ESTATE PLANNING WILLS • TRUSTS • ADVANCE DIRECTIVES POWER OF ATTORNEY GUARDIANSHIPS AND CONSERVATORSHIPS University of Oregon’s Daily Emerald reported May 12 on a rally in Eugene that drew more than 100 protests. Participants were fed up with the Register-Guard’s policy of limit ing birth announcements to listing biological parents only. Parents Rebecca and Sharon Flynn headed up the fight outside the newspaper’s office, speaking out against the discriminatory policy after their request to print an announcement of the arrival of their daughter, Hailey, was refused. Other newspapers including The Oregonian and The Springfield News publish birth announcements for same-sex couples. According to the report, Register-Guard managing editor Dave Baker said in a statement: “If we publish in our announcements that two women, or two men, had a baby, many readers will fault us for inaccuracy. If we don’t allow nonbiological par ents in the listings, we’re accused of being unfair.” The Register-Guard stood by its policy, stating that it was applied fairly to queer and hetero couples who are not the biological parents of their child. Todd Simmons, chairman of the Equality Network, told the Register-Guard: “Eugene is generally a progressive community. You would guess that the Register-Guard would be in step with our community values, but that doesn’t seem to be the case.” After the rally, approximately 180 signatures were gathered requesting a policy change and cancellation of Register-Guard subscriptions. According to the report, McElroy also requests a permanent injunction against use of her “creative expression,” including the camp name. The former director of the Rock ’n’ Roll Camp for Girls, Misty McElroy, is suing the organization’s hoard of directors, Willamette Week reported May 10. McElroy, who is a leshian, is demanding reappointment to the camp and $100,000 in damages. She argues that she was forced to resign last November from the nonprof it she created. Misty McElroy Newsweek Observes 'AIDS at 25' Newsweek dedicated its May 15 issue to “AIDS at 25,” the 25th anniversary of the recognition of AIDS in 1981. The cover features Jennifer Jako, a Portlander who is seven months preg nant; she also appears nude in a stunning pho to essay. The mother- to-be tested pos itive for HIV 15 years ago and has been liv ing with the disease for nine years. With her viral load sup pressed, the report states that her baby daughter has a less than 1 percent chance of being horn with the infection. “I am choosing to live and have a future," Jako told Newsweek. “I need to be there for her.” ©
