Ken Hutcherson recently stirred the pot calling for a boycott of Microsoft. which would add sexual orientation to a state law that already bans discrimination in housing, employ ment and insurance based on race, gender, age, disability, religion, marital status and other factors. Corvallis Film Fest to Benefit Women's Cancer Prevention The Benton County Breast and Cervical Cancer Coalition, in collaboration with the Oregon State University Women’s Center, will A host the second Lunafest Corvallis on Jan. 28. • Lunafest is celebrating its fifth anniversary as the only national touring festival of films "by, for and about women.” Lunafest Corvallis also will fea ture an exhibit of “healing quilts” by local artists. For a nominal fee, Luna makes the films avail able to women’s organizations and donates its proceeds to the Breast Cancer Fund, a national non profit dedicated to investigating environmental caus es of the disease. The rest of the proceeds from Lunafest Corvallis will go to the coalition, whose mis sion is “to reduce the morbidity and mortality of breast and cervical cancer in Benton County,” and to the women’s center for breast cancer education. Last year in Oregon, 2,750 women were diagnosed with breast cancer and 510 women died of the disease. Every woman has l-in-8 lifetime risk of breast cancer. The news is bet ter on cervical cancer because, as pap screen ing has become more prevalent, cancer is being detected more frequently before it becomes invasive. However, the cost of routine mammograms and pap screenings can be prohibitive for women without medical insurance. They often delay or do not seek screening services, result ing in a later diagnosis and a lower chance of survival. Through its early detection screening and education and outreach programs, the coalition helps improve access for women by regardless of income. Lunafest Corvallis will take place 7 p.m. at OSU’s LaSells Stewart Center Austin Auditorium. Tickets cost $8 for students and $10 for general admission and are available at the women’s center, LaSells Stewart Center, Grass Roots Bookstore, Rice’s Pharmacy and BrownPaperTickets.com.
