This is a free community event wel coming Portlanders from all neighborhrxxls. The event will take place at the University Park United Methodist Church Bell Tower Lawn, 4775 N. Lombard St. The organizing committee invites you to kick off Pride Week with food, music, vendor tables and good com pany. Vendors include North Portland resources, neighbors, real estate agents, mort gage brokers, housing developers and others. P ortland B lack P ride 2005 P resents E vent C alendar African-American queers will celebrate Black Pride 2005 with a series of events from June 15 to 19: 6:30 p.m. June 15: Health Education and Community Forum, “The Real Deal with the DL: Women and Men Dispelling the Myths and Exposing the Truths about HIV/AIDS in the African American Community” at Portland State University. Join community members, leaders and advocates for an evening of engag ing activities, a video presentation and a group discussion on the topic. Free HIV testing. Room 236, Smith Memorial Center, 1825 S.W. Broadway. 5 p.m. June 17: Networking Social and Fund-Raiser. Come meet and greet the Portland Black Pride staff, community members, leaders, volunteers and sponsors. There will be erotic art on display, light snacks and beer and wine for sale; 10 percent of all proceeds go to Portland Black Pride. Hip Chicks Do Wine, 4510 S.E. 23rd Ave. Noon June 18: Portland Black Pride b<x>th at Waterfront Park. The booth will have music, card games and HIV/AIDS resources. 9 p.m. June 18: Black Out Party. Live entertainment, complimentary buffet, cash bar and old-school, hip-hop and R & B music. First 25 people get free raffle tickets. S am A dams ’ O ffice W elcomes S ummer I ntern Andrew Tuttle is the newest member of Portland City Commissioner Sam Adams’ staff. Home for the summer from school, Tuttle is interning for the office, working on a number of projects. He has just finished his first year at George Washington University in Washington, D.C., where he is studying international affairs and German language and literature. After spending a year living in Düsseldorf, Germany, as a junior in high school, Tuttle developed an interest in international policy making and has decided to test the waters in Q ueer M utiny , N ot C onsumer U nity Queer Revolution is holding its second Altema-Pride, promoting anti-capitalism and the complex queer identity, and it is calling for volunteers. Organizers ask: “Pride? In what? Pride in being tolerated simply and solely as a consumer community? Pride in being told by consumer society that we have to pay to be gay?” This year’s theme for Altema-Pride will be “A Funeral March for Queer Resistance.” The group will be carrying a coffin and signs about the new queer eugenics and anti-corporatism. Organizer eRuc comments, “Everyone will be gothed out,” so get out your best basic black. The organizers of Altema-Pride chide Pride Northwest for “claiming, packaging and selling the GLBT (leaving out the Q) image to the highest bidder.
