Insensitive in bed! What to do? D ear M s . B ehavior : knows how to put up a tent in three minutes flat, but her inability to communicate with kindness and sensitivity means she’s a lousy lover. Toss her back and hold out for a partner who likes to read AND finds you sexy. I’ve been with my new girlfriend, Sandra, for two months, and we’re compatible in most ways. We both love literature and camping, and we have similar politics. She’s attractive and professional, with a job that keeps her busy but not unavailable. My only complaint about Sandra is sexual: In bed, she becomes this totally different person. She even has a different voice—a whiny, complaining Midwestern tone. Every time we have sex, she says things like: “No, Audrey! Not like that!” And “What the hell are you doing down there.7” And “Well, that’s just no good. Haven’t you ever done this before.7” It’s like being in bed with my overly critical mother. I’m starting to feel horrible about my ability to please her. I’ve talked to her about it and even tried to get her to tell me what she likes sexually when we’re NOT in bed, but she still can’t seem to stop. Now Sandra wants to go to sex therapy to work on “our problem.” Our problem? I’ve never had this happen before. 1 love her madly, except in bed. Surely something can be done, right? —Anxious Audrey I’m a consultant- for-hire in a conserva tive financial industry. Recently, a local newspaper profiled me and my work. When the reporter came to my hofne to interview me, I briefly introduced him to my partner, Tom. I assumed the reporter would be discreet, since Tom has nothing to do with my business life, and rhe reporter didn’t ask any direct questions about my being gay. Much to my dismay, half of the article was about the reporter’s impressions of my private life, including my relationship with Tom. The whole “outing” of my private life upsets me, and I’m feeling too anxious to get anything done. I don’t think there has been any actual fallout yet, but how will I know if there is? How can 1 make sure my clients know I am still the person they thought I was before this article appeared in the paper? (I am straight looking and acting.) Should I issue a statement? —Banking on Your Answer [') ear A nxious A udrey : D ear B anking on Y our A nswer : Who needs a mean, inconsiderate lover? Someone so nasty and insensitive to your feelings during sex is not worthy of your trust in other matters. Masochism is only fun when it’s intentional, within boundaries acceptable to both people. This kind of ego-crushing, emotionally sadistic treatment is not what you signed up for. Hungry sex therapists may disagree, but this doesn’t sound like a case that’s worth the investment. If you said that you and Sandra used to have hot sex but it eventually fell apart and your desire began to wane, Ms. Behavior would encourage you to go to therapy to find out why and try to fix it. Or, if Sandra were sweet and patient but you just hadn’t figured out how to please her, sex therapy might help you communicate better in bed. In that case, Sandra could leam to ask for what she needed in a way that wouldn’t hurt or insult you—“Honey, it would be great if you could move your tongue a little higher”—ami you could become more adept at pleasing her. But sex therapy won’t turn Sandra’s mean streak into something else, especially if she needs to be nasty to get off. So cut your losses: Sandra may be a fun companion who D ear M s . B ehavior :- What sort of statement would you issue to your clients? An assurance that despite your homo lifestyle you’re just as manly as before? An affidavit swearing that you’ll never let your desire for cocksucking interfere with your fiduciary responsibilities? Maybe you could have your picture taken at a rodeo while you try to lasso a big hairy bull and include the photo in your next client mailing. This is clearly a case of someone else—perhaps a divine power?— doing something for you that you could not do for yourself. Namely, growing up and coming out. At this point, anything you say in attempt to discredit the reporter’s observation that you’re gay would make you look like a liar or a self- loathing wimp. Try to muster up the attitude that your sexual orientation is a neutral fact, like hair color or shoe size, and expect others to do the same. It’s a lot better than parading your silly internalized homophobia for all to see. jn M eryl C ohn is the author of Do What I Say: Ms. Behavior’s Guide to Gay and Lesbian Etiquette.
