M ultnomah C ounty C ommissioners C ollecting P hotos , W ritten M emories of S ame -S ex M arriages To mark the first anniversary of the 3,022 same-sex couples who were issued marriage licenses in March and April 2004, Multnomah County commissioners are collecting photos and written memories for display in the lobby of the Multnomah Building during March. The collection will then be turned over to the Ore gon Historical Society and entered into its archives as a resource for future generations. “In a tumultuous time full of legal uncertain ty and strong emotions, it is important to take the time to remember the love that engulfed the county building last year, as same-sex couples realized their long-held dreams of marriage,” Commissioner Maria Rojo de Steffey said. Commissioner Serena Cruz added: “We stood up for people’s rights a year ago. This proj ect chronicles the difference that made for over 3,000 families.” Commissioner Lisa Naito said, “In our long march toward justice, we want history to have a complete record of the huge step we took last year to ensure equal rights for all.” Mary Ann Campbell, library director of the Oregon Historical Society, added: “The same- Good luck smiled as the rain fell on Chris and Jeff Borne, celebrating their wedding day. sex marriages of 2004 are clearly a significant chapter in Oregon history. We are excited to add these materials to our archives.” The Oregon Historical Society Research Library contains one of the country’s most extensive collections of state history materials, including more than 12,000 linear feet of docu ments and more than 2.5 million photographic images. It also houses the Gay and Lesbian Archive of the Pacific Northwest. Multnomah County issued marriage licenses to 3,022 same-sex couples between March 3 and April 20, 2004- Those marriages, while current ly valid, are under legal challenge.
