(7/05) 541-346-1134)0/05) D ear M B e h a v io r s . : I spent the past three weeks in Florida campaigning for John Kerry. I tixyk an unpaid leave from my joh, left my girlfriend to care for my dog and worked with a group of young people who slept on fl(X)rs in sleeping hags and ate fast food. I found the whole thing exhila rating. It was like reliving the late ’60s, when I was actually young enough to live that way. The best part was feeling like what I had to say mattered. Every night, a group of young people gathered around to hear me talk about the civil rights movement and the gay rights move ment and the women’s movement. My problem is this one young woman, Pamela, who followed me everywhere, claiming to he in love with me. After a week, I stopped resisting. Making love to someone in her 20s was a wonderful experience for me. 1 felt alive and happy and free. But now that I’m hack home, Pamela calls me three times a day. She’s threatening to come up here and follow me around until 1 let her into my life. Ms. Behavior, I’m half tempted to let it happen, or else to leave my life and go to her. I haven’t told her because I don’t want to be responsi ble for disrupting her life. But I think I’m on the verge of disrupting my own. Should I do it? Am I out of my mind? My girlfriend and I have been very comfortable together for a long time. And yet I can’t help feeling pulled toward freedom. — Reeling in the morning— are so much more than what any one person can give you. Lots of former activists woke up a few weeks ago and realized they feel too complacent now. If nothing else, the dreary election results may catalyze a whole new revolution. There’s plenty to be done, and it’s great if you’d like to partici pate, but please try to remember that the key to your hap piness isn’t in trading in your life or your girlfriend for a new one. D ear M s . B e h a v io r : My boyfriend, Craig, is very sweet, hut he sometimes allows people to take advantage of him. A few weeks ago his sister Claire came to stay with us “for a few nights’’ because things got ugly with her husband. Claire is 32 and doesn’t have a responsible job. She’s a singer, which means she gcxrs on an audition every two weeks and occa sionally gets a gig singing old Peggy- Lee stings in a motel lounge. Claire’s not a terrible person, but she’s needy and she eats everything in sight and talks loudly on her cell phone 24/7. Craig promises she’ll move out within three months, once she gets her settlement from a law suit, which will enable her to afford another-place. Should I put my foot down and insist that she move out now? Or should I just bite my tongue and let Claire hang out for another three months even though she’s wrecking my quality of life? — Trapped D ear T rapped : Have some compassion and let Claire stay. It's not like she’s wearing your panties, using your Amex card D e a r R e e l in g : or making meatloaf in your tofu-only There’s nothing like having a common cause to make you get Tupperware. Why force Craig to naked with a 20-something com choose between you and his sister, rade. It’s exhilarating to he surround especially since she’ll he moving out ed by like-minded people who are soon? Asking him to turn Claire devoting their energy to an ideal, away in a time of need would strain even when they don’t remove their your relationship. clothes. Now that you’re away from Besides, in the long run, you Pamela, it may seem that this amaz never know when you might need ing passion belonged to her (or at Craig to return the favor: What if least to her dewy young body), hut your brother breaks his leg and it didn’t. ! needs to sleep on your sofa for a few Maybe you need a change in 1 weeks or your mother develops a your life, or maybe you’re feeling taste for Ecstasy and needs a place to nostalgic for your own juicy youth. stay while recovering from her Now you need to ask yourself how addiction? you can find that passion at home.
