Jansson is running in honor of her cousin Jimmy Maggard, who died in 1985, and in honor of Bill Jensen of Scappoose, who is bat tling leukemia. In addition to raising money, she said she wants to raise awareness about leukemia and lymphoma and the need for new research. Nei ther disease is curable, and both can be fatal. “To continue to have new breakthroughs, we need money for research,” Jansson said. Although she’s run three marathons in the past— in Boston; Pensacola, Fla.; and Vancou ver, British Columbia— she said the training for Honolulu has been “a big undertaking." "My last marathon was almost 10 years ago— I’m older now,” she notes with a laugh. “I’m a lit tle out of shape. It’s been a challenge, for sure.” Jansson said she is paying for her travel expens es and accommcxlations, so all of the money she raises will benefit the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. She’s participating with Team in Training, a program that began with one woman, Lucy Duffy, whose husband was diagnosed with leukemia. Duffy raised $22,000 for the society while training for the New York City Marathon in 1986. Two years later, the first Team in Training team was formed, raising $320,000 for the society. The event will be elections, we want to place these important issues squarely before our community,” said William Seaman, a volunteer with Portland Peaceful Response Coalition, one of the co sponsors for the event. "We are calling on all candidates for public office to take a strong and clear stand against war and against occupation.” According to Seaman, the gathering will address the issues of peace, social and global jus tice, civil rights, democracy and human needs. “This rally and march will give voice to the people who knew these wars and occupations were a bad idea from the start, the people who did not suffer a ‘failure of intelligence,’ the peo ple who stood by the truth when it was fashion able to sound the steady drumbeat for war," he said. “T h e halfhearted apologies of The New York Times and The Washington Post do not rem edy the lies they blithely published in support of these criminal wars.” Mikel Clayhold, another volunteer helping organize the march, added, “As in the past, the themes highlight links between local and global issues affected by the U .S.’ permanent war econ omy and military-based foreign policy.” Jeannette Jansson is training to complete the Honolulu Marathon to raise money to cure leukemia and lymphoma For more information call Portland Peaceful Response Coalition at 503-344-5078 or Peace & Justice Works.
