And we have straight hoys and their gal pals to thank for it. Remember when Bush & Co., plus Jerry Fab well, Pat Robertson, Jesse Jackson and the Vati can, said same-sex marriages were an assault on family values? The hot news then was a call for a constitutional amendment to make gay people second-class citizens by denying them marriage rights. Screw equality. Democracy is for normal straight people who promote and thrive on fam ily values. These values are the bulwark of our nation. Well, now even hotter news has forced us off the front pages. Along comes Abu Ghraib (don’t forget Guantanamo Bay, Cuba) and we gay folks get to see family values in action in Iraq. Straight American family values-nurtured soldiers heat ing, raping, sodomizing, stripping, leading on leashes and forcing masturbation and man-on- man sex on Arab prisoners. They even let their guard dogs get in on the action. All for souvenir photos and videotapes for friends hack home (and unfortunately the world at large) to see. Our military isn’t running concentration camps. They’re shooting pom in sex dungeons in a bondage and discipline orgy gone wild. 1 guess straight American guys are more curious about homoerotic stuff than I suspected. Freshly prepared And what about those Christian churches that were so quick to attack gay marriage and to protect family values-(whatever the hell these values really are)? Are they grabbing headlines petitioning our smarmy political leaders to close down these military sex ghettos? Nope. Not a peep. Mum. Christianity in action, 1 guess. And closer to home we have more irony regarding family values. Former Oregon Gov. Neil Goldschmidt (twice married) gets outed for statutory rape (ongoing for possibly three years) of a 14-year-old girl. Current Gov. Ted Kulon- goski, when he isn’t playing job headhunter for the Goldschmidt family, expresses only dismay that we’ll lose Neil’s talent as chairman of the Board of Higher Education. Come on, Ted, throw a bone to the victim, why don’t you— and not like the one Neil did. Family values. Wow. They should come with a warning label.
