may 7.2004 » J U S t O U t|5 R » 73 » I fl out ju s t KHN I ill I Two openly gay men are opposing Portland City Commissioner Randy Leonard; Just Out is endorsing the incumbent. Who do you support and why? e support Frank Dixon for Portland City Council Position 4. Frank is fully qualified by skill, experience and temperament. His experience includes city govern ment, a successful legal practice, military service and leadership in the gay community. Frank serves as co-chairman of Basic Rights Oregon and presi dent of the Northwest District Association, has served on the Police Internal Investigations Audit ing Committee and received a police commenda tion for his community policing work. In short, Frank has the trust and confidence of a diverse cross section of the Portland community. Leonard has expertly used his office to gen erate self-promotional sound bites and head lines. A close look at his record does not show the vision and community-building track record we need to make Portland the future city of choice for families and businesses. We need a city councilor who will work with the commu nity— not an old-style “city boss” who governs by fear and intimidation. Our current problems are so big and compli cated; we must solve them by finding common ground despite different agendas. To do this, we need someone with the skills to unite. Frank has proven that he has these skills and the hard work to put them into action. Frank Dixon is the endorsed candidate of BRO. We will be voting for him May 18. We urge readers of Just Out to do the same. Frank’s Web site is www.dixon4council.com. In contrast to Randy Leonard, Frank Dixon is gay; that is the major reason why Just Out should have endorsed him in the first place. Second, however, is that Frank Dixon is totally qualified for the position; he is the most judicious-minded person I know in the gay and gay veteran community, and he is one of the most respected figures in the gay community. Third, Frank is co-chairman of Basic Rights Oregon and therefore obviously has the trust and confidence of a large part of the Portland community. Fourth, Frank is a man of towering integrity. Fifth, he is so well-rounded politically and intellectually that he is well able to make important civic decisions on the broadest range of issues. Sixth, he has experience in city government as well as in legal practice. Last, but as important as any of the above, Frank Dixon is NOT a fringe candidate, as Just Out mistakenly claims. L ee C oleman Aloha • • • I support Frank Dixon because of his experience in problem solving in government affairs. Frank will listen to the electorate and act on their input. He has a proven record in community policing in all of Northwest Portland; our city and our community are safer because of his efforts. Frank’s style of governing is not to create controversy that gets attention but to make positive changes to make our city a better place for all our citizens. As a gay man 1 support Frank Dixon not because he’s gay but because he is the best candidate we have running for City Council Position 4. N orm C osta lark H • • • P lease support Mr. Dixon. I have known Frank for many years, and he is about the most perfect candidate for our community we could ever ask for. Mr. Dixon has spent years working for our rights and our well-being; we need his abilities and commitment. Let’s all get out and VOTE. N ick F ish Portland Do your research To t h e K E d it o r : PTV online ran an article April 20 from The Associated Press that began, “A judge Portland ltvs never too late To t h e E d it o r : I attended the political demonstration April 18 in front of Portland State Universi ty. This was to counter the representatives of Fred Phelps. This was the first time I had ever done some thing like this, but 1 felt the need to respond when a friend of mine asked for people to come. I represented perhaps 10 percent of the commu nity that was there beyond the students of PSU. Thankfully, their numbers were much larger, and together we presented a nice, dignified response to the words and gestures of Phelps’ supporters, who numbered perhaps eight. In the end they left first, leaving the street to us. So, to all of you who didn’t make it, perhaps I might offer that it is never too late to be pres ent, to counter hate with love, to let yourself he known to others, to vote, to write letters. At 45 years old, 1 am glad that I finally took to the streets. Thank you to each of you who over the years defended and protected my right to have that privilege. Thank you also to the students of PSU for defending their right to he who they are. W illiam K aufman Portland To the E ditor : I C M ike K rzeszak Log Cabin fever Portland am supporting Frank Dixon. Far many years he’s been involved in civic work, neighbor hood associations and the Office of Neighbor hood Involvement and out on the streets for numerous issues. Also, Randy Leonard is not very supportive of neighborhood associations and the people who spend countless hours in these or ganizations. He doesn’t network and build coali tions the way Frank Dixon does. This is a very important issue to my partner and me, since we are one of the couples who stood in line on that first day for a marriage cer tificate from M ultnomah County. KPTV should really do a little more research before printing a story. The article it printed reads like something it was handed from the Defense of Marriage Coalition! I invite others to share their views with news director Troy McGuire at kptvnews@kptv.com. P atrick Guerriero, executive director of the Log Cabin Republicans, has called Presi dent Bush’s endorsement of the Federal M ar riage Amendment to the Constitution a “dec laration of war on gay and lesbian families” and “a dramatically bad step for the presi dent.” Guerriero warned the G O P that Bush has jeopardized the 1 million gay votes he received in the 2000 election. Gay conserva tive columnist Andrew Sullivan has told Aaron Brown on C N N , “The Republican Party has lost the support of gay people for a generation.” It is now more important than ever for gay men and women to engage in conversation with our mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters, friends and co-workers over how damaging and hateful the amendment is to our lives. If the G O P feels the political fallout from attacking gay people and our families, along the lines of what Guerriero and Sullivan have predicted, Bush’s radical position to write discrimination into our nation’s Constitution might mark the beginning of the end of G L B T people being used as a political punching hag. on Tuesday ordered Multnomah County to stop issuing marriage licenses to gay and lesbian couples....” The article’s whole point is to highlight only the fact that a judge ordered Multnomah County to stop issuing marriage licenses to gays and lesbians. The same day JustOut.com posted its story M arc P aige Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. about how we had won another victory for gay marriage. The AP article neglects to even men- j tion (as you point out) that “The ruling also requires the state of Oregon to recognize the he April 16 feature “Art and P:EAR-ity” marriages between same-sex couples who have 1 omitted the artist credit for the cover already gotten married in Multnomah County. image.
