After earning his law degree from George town University in 1981, Kistler served as a judicial law clerk to U.S. Supreme Court Justice Rives Kistler is the first and only openly gay judge to sit on any state supreme court ^eing appoint- ec| to r^c ^ ourt ° * Appeals in 1999 by Gov. John Kitzhaber. Gov. Ted Kulongoski appointed him to the Supreme Court in 2003. Shortly before the filing deadline, Lake Oswego attorney James Leuenherger announced his candidacy in opposition to Kistler. Leuen herger has represented Oregon Citizens Alliance chairman Lon Mahon and other conservatives. Kistler also will he the target of a dem on stration staged by the Rev. Fred Phelps from 7:45 to 8:15 a.m. April 19 outside the Oregon Supreme Court building located at 1163 State St. in Salem . The anti-gay preacher picketed at the funeral of Matthew Shepard in 1998.
