McMenamins Edgefield •
2126 S.W. Nalsey St., Troutdale
t is worth the 20-minute drive out of Port
land for what I humbly proclaim the best
burger in the metro area. Just listen to this:
“Grilled half-pound naturally raised Painted
Hills Beef patty with Oregon blue cheese and
pepper bacon served with all the usual suspects
on a hearth-baked roll...served with steak
fries.” You will enjoy one of the most savory,
naughty, mcxxl-altering burger experiences of
your life, complete with skins still on the fries!
(Burgers at your neighborhixxl McMenamins
pub are fine hut hear little resemblance to this
work of art.)
Besaw’s Café • 2301 N.W. Savier St.
W
ant your g(xxl old basic burger with the
freshest ingredients at a gtxxJ old neigh-
borhcxxl eatery? You can’t go wrong at
Besaw’s. They’ve been serving meals to North
west Portland kx:als for nearly a century, so it
comes as no surprise they’ve got their burger
down pat by now. A scrumptious onion hun,
6 ounces of beef, the crispiest of lettuce, toma
to and onion. And potato salad on the side.
I’m patting my belly just thinking about it.
(Your vegetarian sweetie will love the grilled
eggplant and ptovolone sandwich, by the way.)

I
’ve been thinking about the symbolism of
the hamburger. It’s more than a hunk of
ground-up meat on a hun. It’s a social signi-
fier akin to apple pie, baseball and “Mom.”
Nothing says mainstream American meal like
“burger & fries.” Does it, a priori, follow then
that when a happenin’ lesbian lass (or sassy
gay gent) eats a burger, she or he commits a
subversive act? 1 think so! But what, then, to
make of the Turkey Burger? The Garden or
Lentil Burger? The Portobello Mushroom
Burger? These variations of the beef burger
are in themselves subversions o f the norm.
What does it mean when the subversive
human eats the subverted meal? Double jeop
ardy? Radicalism run amok? No! It is the
long-overdue “Queering of the American
Meal.” Join me, my queer brethren and
sistren, in taking our proverbial place at the
picnic table.

Battle of the burgs
1
T
he other day, late to an appointment, I
turned into the drive-thru to scarf some
quick sustenance for the evening. Lo! The
Spicy Black Bean Gardenburger® cried out to
me. Once a promotional item, it’s now been
added to the permanent Burgerville menu.
Dripping with Tillamook pepper jack cheese
and chipotle mayo, this sandwich is dangerous
to eat in five wolfing bites in your car. It’s quite
tasty and makes you feel pseudo-healthy, as
long as you avoid the instant heartburn and
mess that I incurred. (Oh yeah, their regular
burgers are good, too.)
